Yeah, it was. 6,900 HP at speed, but at low speeds the turbine couldn't cut it and didn't supply enough draft to the boiler.
Got more info?
Never heard of a turbine assist on one of those hogs.

Was it coal or diesel?
Looks like 6-8-6, was that due to weight?...

Looks like 6-8-6, was that due to weight?...
Full steam turbine drive, the turbine was geared to the center two drive axles and drove the front and rear axles through the side rods. You can see the turbine casing on the side over the drive wheels. Note there are no cylinders connected to the drive rods.

Another local pic of the fill across the lake for US 10 later to become I-90. The bridge in the foreground was to relocate the Milwaukee rails. In the early 90's the bridge piers were cut and jacked 24" for more truck clearance.
The big transformer poles in the bottom left are still there feeding an irrigation pump station. In 2013 my guys and I replaced nearly 2 miles of old pipe coming off that station and another further to the left. moses_lake_6_15_57.jpg
