In June, 1950, the Illinois Central took delivery of four E&A's, numbered 4018-4021. These locomotives were delivered in the traditional chocolate brown and orange colors. 4018-4021 also had the "old style" green diamond emblem, where the horizontal bar with "Illinois Central" lettering did not extend outside the green diamond. These were the last new locomotives delivered with this emblem. On future locomotives (and repaints) the horizontal bar with
"Illinois Central" lettering extended beyond the diamond.
IC wound up buying sixteen E8A's and two E8B's.
Number 4019 was photographed at the 27th Street roundhouse around 1960. By this date the locomotive has been repainted with the newer style green diamond emblem. Tragically, 4019 would be destroyed January 24, 1970, when the southbound
"City of New Orleans" hit a gasoline tanker at a grade crossing in Loda, IL. The engineer and two others in the cab were killed plus the truck driver.
Afterwards 4019 was scrapped.
