Selective Fire FAL

I have a G-Series FAL which was converted into a selective fire FAL in 1974. In two years it will be 50 years old and then fall into the C&R class of NFA weapons. I'm considering selling it and was wondering if I should wait for two years until it has reached the C&R class to sell it or put it up for sale now. Currently it will have to go through the SOT dealer but if I wait two years, the direct C&R FFL to C&R FFL route can be used. Any ideas/comments/opinions? Thanks..

While converted in 1974, the gun itself was made in the early-1960s so I believe it’s already a C&R. Perhaps members more versed in NFA stuff will shed some light...

As the year of mfg isn’t kept in records when a post sample MG is sold then I do believe it’s based off the date of original Mfg so should already qualify as C&R. Only the original MFG has record of year as that would be on the form 2. Could be wrong but that’s my 2 cents

You could always write the BATF and ask that it be added to the C&R list, it should qualify because a substantial part of its value is due to rarity and production prior to a historic event: https://www.atf.gov/firearms/curios-relics

C&R status requires original configuration - so either the gun gets manually added to the list or you have to wait 50 years from conversion date.

According to John Keene, NFA specialist for the Morphy Auction Company. A C&R license does not allow you to skip the NFA transfer process. You still must submit fingerprints and photographs, and wait 6-9 months for your tax stamp to be processed. Once it is approved, however, a C&R eligible machine gun can be shipped interstate to you, without having to go through an NFA dealer in your state.

Yes. As stated by Falcon, the BATF NFA transfer process of Forms, fingerprint cards and $200 transfer fee must be done. If the gun is classed as C&R, it can go directly from one C&R FFL to another C&R FFL WITHOUT having to pass through a SOT dealer in the state of residence of the purchaser. The advantage is that only one $200 transfer fee is required and only one wait time. A transfer of a non C&R gun would require two $200 transfer fees and two wait times. The first one would be the transfer of the gun from the current owner to the SOT dealer in the state of the buyer. The second one would be the $200 fee to transfer the gun from the SOT dealer to the purchaser and the wait associated with that transfer. Going C&R to C&R saves $200 in transfer fees and probably only one year wait time instead of two years.

I have contacted the BATF about getting it classed as an NFA C&F gun. I was told that it could not be done. The was originally classed as a C&R gun. When it was modified by converting it to selective fire, it was no longer in its original condition. Since it was no longer in its original condition, the modification removed it from the C&R class. The next best thing is to wait two more years and then it will be a 50 year old gun and fall into the C&R class because of its age.

Out of curiosity, who is listed on the transfer Form as the manufacturer?

With MG prices what they are now, I think it would be a good time to consider selling.

If/when you do sell it, do it yourself via Sturmgewehr for maximum return. The Form 4 is easy to fill out, and since it's a long-gun, you can ship via USPS no problem.

Personally, I don't think C&R status is going to affect the price too much. With the shit-show transfer process, whoever buys it is going to have a long assed wait, regardless of how many transfers it takes to get it to the end user/buyer.

I didn't see the OP say this was a dealer sample. Fully transferable? I thought only a SOT can transfer a form 4 machine gun regardless of age of the weapon?

A few months ago, I sold one of my Uzis.

Form 4 to out of state FFL/SOT and shipped on transfer approval. No middleman dealer required on my end.

I've bought a few Thompsons on a C+R.
Got into an argument with an ATF newb over this.
Its OK.
What is weird is that some West Hurley Thompsons also can transfer on a C+R even though they were manufactured just before the ban.

I'm curious as to what a transferable G1 would sell for.
For sure there cant be that many...a handful ?
I'm guessing 50K plus.

I disagree, a transferrable FAL is a transferrable FAL as far as value, the configuration is meaningless if it's a converted MG. I can take any transferrable FAL receiver and put it in any configuration I want. Doesn't change the value really.

If it was a factory made gun, that's a different story. It's only FACTORY once.

I bought a C&R AR10 from an out-of-state guy. As other said, did prints, paperwork. 11.5 months later it was sent directly to me. UPS left it on my stoop with no signature. oops.

In the AR10 world a non-C&R gun tends to have a replacement or rewelded lower receiver. So these guns tend to sell for approximately half of what a C&R would sell for. I am sure your converted G-series would not suffer from this penalty.

You may be right.
If so I'm a buyer of any and all converted from semi factory G1s to transferables per the machinegunpriceguide figure of 30K.
