Pachmayr lists pads by either shotgun or rifle. Whyzat? Seems their rifle pads are solid, where shotgun may have the vented style.

Reason for asking: I have a rifle with a 1.5" chip off the heel. Figured I might cut and install a 1.125" vented pad then use a piece of the removed lumber to repair the remaining small chip. But thick pads are all listed as "shotgun" pads. Will a shotgun pad hold up to a rifle?

Personally, I would recommend patching the stock with a piece of wood that matches as closely as possible, and then attaching a rifle pad. Yes, it will be apparent that the stock was patched, at least upon close examination. Not much way around that. A thick pad will also make it apparent that the stock has been cut and patched. That's my humble opinion, anyway.

It's not in any way close to ever being collectible. 30-06 Remington ADL with worn bluing. It's a work gun. I'd like a recoil pad anyhow, cutting for a thin one is as easy as a thick one. I want one that actually affects recoil (i.e. not a 3/8" thick solid rubber plate), but will hold up.

Upon further review by the officiating crew I think I like your idea better. Recoil pads are expensive, take work to install, I'm cheap, this is a working gun, and I've never found a 30-06 to require a recoil pad. Just need to find a sliver of walnut to repair, and a new buttplate.

I'm an asshole.

I would put a slip-on rubber recoil pad on that, and go to the range and shoot it until it was zeroed.

Then I would take the pad off, and take it out hunting. In the rain. I might even leave the rubber slip-on on the gun.

Still needs a quality scope mount, and a good-enough scope that will hold zero from one season to the next.

I like that gun.

Everything that is "wrong" about that gun is WHY I like it.

I'm extremely partial to ONE-PIECE scope bases and modest-sized scopes.

If one piece base and Leupold VX3i 3.5-10 is wrong, then I dont wanna be right.

Why a 3.5-10 you axe? Well, I'll tell ya. Becauae that's the scope in Marketplace that was for sale for what I thought was a good price, and I'm no fancy boy askeered of a used Leupold. I'd rather a 2-7x, but if hunting in those environs I'll be taking the Remington 760 or the 6.5 Grendel AR.

Were it mine, I'd lop that much off and put a thick Pachmyr or Kickeze on in its place. I'd finally have the LOP where I wanted it and I could take it to the range in a t-shirt.

Otherwise, Mark Novak has several videos showing how he repairs this type of damage. It would be more convenient if you still had the missing chip but isn't critical.

That was my initial inclination. But getting a square cut, sanding flat, grinding a pad to contour.... I have done it and could do it again. If I buy a fine tooth blade for my miter saw, and buy a recoil pad... then I'd still need to do a small repair.

Pop off the stock and send it to Paul Yellowhand. He'll make it look as good as factory, won't cost a ton, or look like Bubba did it, and it won't burn up a bunch of your time doing it. Pad and all, he'll fix it up. Personally, I like the Pachmyer Decelerator pad and have used a couple.

We've been talking on PM's, he's going to do it himself, and I'm supplying the wood he needs. (y)

I feel like I've abused YH's generosity with previous projects, though I have bothered him for some walnut scraps to execute the repair on this one.

Don’t know how you intend to repair the butt plate, but this is what I’ve done many times over the years.

Brownell’s Acraglas Gel mixed with their black epoxy pigment. Add atomized steel or not, as you wish.

After the wood is repaired, slap on the glass. Once cured, shape to fit. I cut the outside edges on a jig that hangs in front-of a disk sander. The same one used to finish grind new pads.

If you’re interested, I’m sure I have several take off factory butt plates. Send me a tracing of your butt plate.
I’ll compare to the take offs I have. If I have one big enough to fit, you can have it.
I’ll mail it to you.

I've met this lovely lady, and she is a badass. You probably don't want to venture there,

She has put up with Paul for decades and keeps him in line, so I suppose that goes without saying.
