I had a couple of programs on my old laptop but was never really pleased with either. Now a new laptop and I need to download something (free).

What do any of you use and recommend? Online reviews seem to point me to PhotoDirector Essential.

What kind of editing? Resize, change format, remove shadows, or something else? For resize/format, sharpen, grayscale, etc, I use the free Irfanview. I just found a program for editing shadows/unwanted objects out that is better than Paint but it costs $15. It is called Inpaint.

I've been using IrfanView in different versions since 1999. It's always been my go-to program. There are some great free plugins and filters available, also.

Gimp can also remove an object if you add the "Heal Selection" plugin. It's all free.

I'll take a look at IrfanView, thanks gents.

GIMP is one I had on the old PC, but for me was not intuitive to use. If I had someone coach me in it for an hour or two I'm sure it's great, but I never figured out 10% of it's capabilities in just dabbling with it.

Totally agree. In my opinion, Gimp has a learning curve that matches Photoshop. I mainly just use it for a few things.

The Paint (or 2D or whatever it's named this year) that comes with most MS laptops is pretty useful. Crop, rotate, align, brighten, saturate, etc are all there. 98% of what I used PhotoShop for developing FAL Primer can now be done a heck of a lot faster with Paint.

I hate that ribbon with a passion, so I instead use Paint XP. It basically gives you the old Paint interface back.

Gunplumber uses/used Gimp. He would be glad to spend a few hours on the phone to walk you through. You're welcome. :);):ROFLMAO::LOL:~ss

I generally use an old version of photoshop for in depth editing.

I’ve used a various editors on a single photo because some offer different editing techniques that otherwise are only available with that particular site or program.

Picasa, if it’s still available is one that I downloaded years ago.

Depending on what your needs are, there’s a lot of free “on line” editors.

Basically upload your photo, edit then save it back to your files.

Lunapic is pretty good.

A sample of a photo I just took.

That is the type of thing I would like to be able to do. I can crop & resize failes in Paint. I can enhance, darken, lighten, etc. with MSPhotos.

A bit more advanced but not taking a software engineer to figure out is my sweet spot I'm seeking. Uploading then downloading is not it tho.

Mike are you taking these pics on your phone? Most phones can do some mods by themselves. I have done it before, even if I could remember how your phone would be different 😁 I think it offeres "edit" as an option while viewing the photo in question. I am not iphone compatible...
