Being pre-1968 there isn't a serial number requirement, however presuming it was numbered at some point now isn't.
What should happen in this case?

It would have to have been welded over pre-1968.

Unfortunately, trying to explain to anyone who was in a position to hassle someon over it, may be pointless. I just spent a couple hours as a "subject matter expert" trying to explain to an ATF investigator that a home made FAL (not mine) off a Aussie 1980s forging was perfectly legit.

And point of clarification, "obliterated" applies only to the serial number on a title 1 firearm.
