This was voiced over by James Earl Jones who went uncredited until the 3rd film. He thought of himself as a "special effect". Probably the most impactful voice over of all time.

Interesting fact - James Earl Jones is an incurable stutterer. In normal speech and if he were to try to ad lib he stutters. Only when he is in a role and delivering rehearsed lines can he speak without stuttering. I find this amazing for one of the iconic voices of our age.
