How to buy precious metals?

Looking to buy some silver and gold. I’ve done some rambles around the US Mint web site and will probably pick up a few coins, I’m more interested in bars and bullion but all the searches bring up ads so I’m leery of scams.

So does anyone know of legitimate and reliable site that you would recommend?

You could also try a "Wanted" ad here, or at other forums. I've seen several lots of silver (rounds, scrap US coins, Maple leaf, etc) sold here. Be wary of the "WTB" scammers though. Lots of stuff on e$$bay, but prices are running well over current spot over there.

I tend to prefer scrap US silver coins. Most everyone recognizes them for what they are, so if/when the time comes to part with them, they're easy to get rid of. The last large lot of scrap US silver coins I bought was at a local coin shop, at 10% under spot.
An added bonus was finding 4 1942D double die quarters in pretty nice shape!
