As an aside, I HIGHLY recommend plugs and muffs.

It's a long and really an important story, but I shot big guns in small spaces with just plugs and gave myself enough concussions to damage my brain and change my personality for a couple of years. I had to take short term disability, seek therapy, almost ruined my marriage, and go through a long line of medications as my brain healed itself. 4 years later, I'm still not back entirely back to normal.

Wear the protection folks.

Those slimline electronic muffs are outstanding. I wear mine when duck hunting in addition to on the range. They amplify quiet sounds and block loud noises like gunfire. The slim design means they don’t interfere with shouldering or sighting rifles and shotguns - at least for me. I’ve got my kids wearing them also.

Good electronic inside the ear are fine for any outdoor shooting endeavor. If I'm shooting indoors, from cars, etc.. I wear muffs over plugs,

What about this type - https://huntingmark.com/electronic-ear-plugs-for-shooting/ - but I know what you mean I have the slim Muff Howard Leight's(25db), and some bigger bulbed 32 db ones('uge) - both get in the way! Not so sure these little micro electronic devices are good for a more concussive 30 Cal sort of round - maybe pistol, I don't know!!!???? - I see they can get very expensive!

The other thing that bugs me is wearing eye pro that lifts up my muffs, reducing their effectiveness, or the muffs pushing the temples of the glasses painfully into my ears.

I have two pairs of these thin electric muffs from Walker.

They are less likely to contact the buttstock than the older, rounder designs, but not perfect. For safety, I will never have a non-electronic pair. It is essential to hear what people are saying around you, especially if you're teaching a newbie.
