5.45x39 ammo ?

Post by JH64 »

Working on getting a new 74 i have a pretty decent amount of 7n6 but wanted to try some commercial ammo. GT Wolf classic and mil spec seems like available options at this time. I have no experience with non surplus so I was hoping fot some feedback.

5.56x39? New wildcat I haven't heard of?

I assume since you said 7n6 you mean 5.45x39. Wolf is fine. I have one rifle that eats it all and one rifle that is under gassed and only likes the laquer stuff.

Honestly if you had one of those POS century builds made with a 5.56 spec blank, .224” bullets in 5.45 cases would be a viable solution.

Its a Vepr fm74-11 . I also have an SGL 31-61 i bought years back when they were a dime a dozen. And a crate of 7n6 was $170.

wolf mil spec would be at the top of the list, after 7n6

Is the Mil Spec any different than the classic besides the sealant? Looks like you can get a case of classic for around $205 shipped

Check out Barnaul. Some people are getting good accuracy out of it and it’s the cheapest avail right now

it is lacquered steel cases and sealant applied to the primer and projectile - got to ammo.
wolf classic is poly coated steel and no sealant - range ammo

The Wolf Mil-Spec is made by Barnaul and has sealed primers and bullets as well as lacquered cases like the 7N6.
It shoots great from my SLR104-FR, almost as accurate as the Hornady VMax. Second best is the Vympel, either Golden Tiger or Red Army Standard. You can tell it’s made by Vympel as it has the distinctive purple sealant and case markings.

You can also tell because it says so on the box.

Not everyone stores their ammo in the paper box. Some of us don't got room for that. I can fit ~1k in a 30 call ammo box without the boxes. It's often useful to be able to roughly ID ammo without a box.

Typo 5.45x39 .
You know you can edit your original post and headline right? Unless someone has actually quoted your OP you could make them all look like fools.

Just sayin 8-)

Barnaul and Wolf 60 FMJ bullet ammo should be good.

Golden Tiger FMJ ammo might be alright.

Avoid Tula and Tulammo 5.45 ammo.

Of the Wolf and Barnaul ammo, Military Classic is Wolf's economy line.

It usually had extruded powder.

Wolf Mil Spec has been made with both extruded and ball powders for some reason.

Barnaul developed 60 grain lead core FMJ 5.45 ammo for the Russian police and military for, "urban" use.

That ammo has ball powder.

Golden Tiger has ball powder.

The ball powder ammo seems a bit hotter.

Tulammo 5.45 ammo might use ball powder, but it is very wimpy.

Even the cheapest Wolf with extruded powder is close to the higher lines and Barnaul in velocity and much better than Tulammo 5.45 ammo.

Some of the military classic might be the same, depending on production.

I would like to see this. Perhaps you meant a 50 cal ammo can.

50 cal box will hold more. I added 500rnds the other day to my ~1/3 full 30 call can of 5.45. I usually can get ~900+ rnds of 5.56 in a 30 call can too.

If your 5.45x39 likes some ammo more than others dump it.

Make sure it's not a mag thing

A few years back Sam had a pallet of Wolf Mil-Spec green box that was misprinted either 556x39 or 545x45. Can't remember which, might still have some. Will post a pic if I find it.

Silver Bear and the 7N6 surplus are what I use, the polymer coated cases have issues with sticking in the chamber on my original chrome lined Bulgarian barrel.
