This is several thousand tons of nitrates, not lbs. For comparison, the OKC bomb was about 3 tons.

For the second time, for the illiterate amongst us (most of you, apparently), it was 2750 TONS, or 5.5 MILLION LBS of ammonium nitrate, evidently stored somewhat haphazardly in a warehouse that was also full of fireworks.

Tons/pounds, apples and oranges.
It WAS a BIG bang!
The experts are looking at it right now, trying to figure the exact size based upon the damage area, over pressures etc.
Will take them a few days to get a good estimate, always does.
And not done by Lebanese.:)LOL
As for the ammonium nitrate, "evidently stored somewhat haphazardly in a warehouse that was also full of fireworks", in a country that prides itself on having thousands upon thousands of Iranian rockets, you believe the reports you wish too.

If I were H3zb0ll4h I would say the Iranian rocket dump was ammonium nitrate too.

What kind of genius stores ammonium nitrate with fireworks? Perhaps a bit of diesel fuel as well? The Big Kaboom was a question of when not if.

2750 tons ( )of ammonium nitrate stored in an unsecure warehouse.
iirc wasnt there like 2 other detonations of the same stuff in Galveston and some other place in the world.

But i still state its a cool boom.

I have a very, very good friend who’s immediate family are many generational Beirut Orthodox Cristians and who call Beirut home. He was flying a trip so was away, but his family is physically unharmed, although the emotional scars won’t be known for quite awhile. His 9 year old daughter is freaking out. She saw stuff we don’t want our kids to ever see.
I’ve only been busting his balls to move here, but the pull of home is strong in all people’s hearts, and he refuses to leave his home for Arab hordes.

Jesus that was one big boom.

The local word for a couple hours after was that it was IDF, but even the locals know that this is a bit much for the IDF, and they at least try now to level the entire city.

Yeah, probably not in line with best practices.
Ammonium nitrate, all by itself, isn't very easy to set off. However, get it good and hot in a fire and start setting off large flash powder salutes (like the ones in class B [UN 1.3]) fireworks in the vicinity...

Crater?

It was stored in the sub-levels at the warehouse?

Remember it was a 5.5 MILLION lbs of chemical. The ammonia nitrate created more or less an ANFO type explosion. Even at 80% efficiency of TNT.
That's still a 4.4M lb bomb.

So yeah..a crater.

There was one in Texas City in 1947 where a ship loaded with 2300 tons of ammonium nitrate caught fire and exploded. Killed nearly 600 people, and as you can imagine, did some major damage. There have been quite a few notable large accidental industrial explosions in history.

Sensitize ammonium nitrate with an organic, and then introduce an ignition source, BOOM.
