Ever Have a magazine that just won't feed?

Post by easttex »

Ever have a magazine that just won't feed?

Well, I have one. Of the eight FAL mags I own, this is only one that is coated (unsure if Duracoat, Cerokote, Duplicolar, etc). It locks up almost so tightly that you have to hit it a few times to remove it from the mag well and the rifle consistently fails to feed from either side of the magazine. My other magazines - all parkerized - run flawlessly.

My question is: do you think the overly tight lock up and feeding are related? Or could they be mutually exclusive of each other? I'm wondering if I got some aircraft stripper and removed the coating from this magazine if that might help. I'm also wondering if a new floorplate, spring, and follower would be of any benefit, either?

Thoughts?

Otherwise, the rifle runs well enough. A few of you saw in December at James' river shoot. The only problem I had were related to this one magazine.

Throw it away, life is too short to mess or worry with that crap.

Paint it orange or red or whatever and use it in a vise for a work/cleaning mount :)

I explained the orange FAL mag and so the purpose of the plastic AR with the wood block screwed into it becomes obvious as well.

Can you identify what else you are seeing on this work/cleaning stand?

The spring, follower and base plate maybe useful if its a metric. However, if so inclined I would mess with it, and try to figure it out - $20 can feed a family - waste not want not!

How does it compare to other mags? Is it only tight on the locking lug or ballooned out on the sides at all. Are the feed lips bent upwards so they hit the bolt or anything else? Is the mag rubbing on the sides? You can smash the sides inwards and tap the feed lips down. If the mag is wider than usual allowing rds to go more like they are side to side it creates more friction slowing the spring feeding the next round. There's always take the mag apart and clean it brushing anything like rust and dirt out of there. Could be it's just a tight lockup but the feed lips are too low. A bit more observation and explaining would help. Then the tire iron with rag on the prying end can be figured out for where to apply it :) Rubber mallet and sitting on the mag or such could help when you figure out where it's screwed up :)

A good light and base plate off while controlling the follower up and down in the mag body can help figure out whats up. Flashlight on spring end watching from other end and visa versa if it's a travel restriction it will show up. Don't let a simple piece of metal fool you or it's back to the stone age. If it's the lockup maybe a file or something. Saw mags for sale that saidd the were inch converted to metric. You know that means possibly you got one of those tricks as far as anyone knows and the trick wasn't done very well.

Good luck with the problem. Can't be that hard. If all else fails a BFH gives satisfaction :)

I'll take a look at the magazine tonight with the innards removed and see if squeezing it does anything or not. I've been running in too many directions to pull all that out this week.

It costs roughly $5 just to load the flipping mag just once. My free time for fun at the range is limited. I don’t have the time or interest in troubleshooting a fugged up $15 magazine. They do make amusing targets though.
