Well, I guess I agree and disagree in some aspects.
I get not wanting the “word of N” dropped all over the place. I get not wanting people calling them monkeys. I get not allowing jews to be called “k$kes” and so on. The board owner and mods want to keep things out of the gutter for the most part, and using slurs like that is unbecoming.
I disagree with banning people for subbing in different words/names for blacks, jews, whites, Asians, etc.
Calling them Canadians (funny, this was our code word at the bar I worked at way back in college) or whatever else shouldn’t be an issue, in my opinion.
But the powers that be have decided they don’t want this. I can understand, because it is a slippery slope.
However, it has been explained several times that people can freely say what they want, express negative beliefs about whoever or whatever, and go on a tirade if they want so long as they use grown up words.
Seems fair enough.
As for mod pushback...
I think it just comes down to the members being respectful to some degree, and mods not being heavy handed or dicks.
From what I’ve seen, you are free to tell the Mods you disagree with their opinion, judgement, etc.
People fairly regularly give some of them grief, and some go a little farther.
Hell, if Nails banned everyone who made a smart assed comment (not in jest) to him, or gave him a hard time, he’d be banning people every day for it. But he doesn’t.
You are allowed to disagree with the mods and argue with them, as long as you aren’t just being an asshole and saying shit like “fuck you nails. I hope you get sodomized to death, you cock sucker”.
As for speaking of jews being verboten, I get what you are saying. However, we still discuss jews, Israel, etc and it isn’t an issue. Critique is allowed. Opinions are allowed. Hell, my off color jokes are permitted (usually). IAN made his thread regarding the Jew bashing, if I recall, because it was getting a bit out of hand at one point. Everything was jews jews jews. Somebody could start a thread about their irritable bowel syndrome, and by the second page it had turned into “IBS is a Jew conspiracy to diagnose people with a made up illness that they patented the meds for, in the hopes of getting all your shekels”.
While I find racial/religious/etc jokes, satire, etc. funny, even I was feeling that it was getting tiresome.
Basically, I get what you are saying. Yes sometimes moderation gets a little too tight. Personally I disagree with the ban length policy. However, I feel our mods do a great job allowing things to get feisty without allowing it to turn into a shit show, and also not clamping down too tight.
They walk the line, essentially.
And mind you, I’m no saint. I say these things as someone who has been banned many, many times. And some of them I felt were stupid bans for things obviously said in jest. So I don’t always agree with the mods, but I’d say they do a great job.
