I just had a bird out by my lake that looks like a heron or egret but is pure white. My Google-fu is not finding anything that I can match that lives in the midwest. Any ides?

We have Egrets here... we had a half dozen transient residents in the swamp at my old place every year.
Juvenile blue herons are white also,,, makes ID harder at this time of year.

Googling some more, I agree it must be an egret. I don't recall ever seeing them up here, but Wikipedia says they can range as far as southern Canada.

Whopping Crane? They have black tips on their wings, but when not flying can appear to be completely white.

Just north of you in Illinois we had Cattle Egrets. While they did wade around in low lands and swamps, they really preferred the pastures and would walk behind the cattle eating the insects stirred up.

We see these white egrets all the time when we are down at our place in FL, but in a lifetime of boating, skiing, fishing the Ohio River and various lakes around here, plus having a lake in my front yard since 2007, I don't think I've ever seen one around here.

We do have a great blue heron that hangs out with us here a lot of the summer, but this is the first time for the white egret. He did amuse himself for about 5 minutes this morning by waiting until the crazy barking and running yellow lab and boxer got within 10 or 15 feet, then lazily flying across the lake so the dogs had to run to the other side and do it all over again LOL.

It's just white flight from Armadillo invasion and you are seeing the leading edge of its effects.
