Nazi Field Marshall Wilhelm Keitel, one of Hitler’s most trusted Lieutenants, reportedly hung from a rope for 28 excruciating minutes before he succumbed to death.
It goes to show no one in the military knew how to tie a proper hangman' knot.

Pierrepoint hanged some of the common Nazi criminals. I think they deliberately did not want to use him as it would have made it too easy on the top Nazis. They also didn't let them know when they would be hanged, just dragged them out of their cells at 2Am. They could not legally torture them, so they strangled them instead.
Woods was a professional fuck-up who was given a Dishonorable Discharge from the Navy. The need for military personnel was so desperate during WW2 that the Army recruiter overlooked this fact. He lied to get the hangman job; but, there probably wasn't too much competition for the position. The executions that he was supposed to have done before the war in Texas and Oklahoma never happened; the last official hangings in Texas, and Oklahoma were done before he was born. He was closet psycho who took the job for a promotion to Sargent; and it was probably considered easy duty. By most accounts, he was incompetent at his job; most of his subjects choked to death instead of having their necks broken. Some of the assholes he hanged probably deserved what they got; but this doesn't make him some kind of hero. ..........James.

Biblically a person executed by hanging is supposed to strangle to death - the 'short drop' method. The 'long drop' neck-breaking is a fairly late invention mainly practiced in English-speaking countries, and former English colonies.

Whaddya mean? Are you saying you don't believe Bill's granpappy and his buddy (who just happened to be named "Rosenthal") shot the locks off the camp gates where there was already a fight in progress taking place involving a group of Waffen SS that had been cornered by a bunch of barefoot and skinny prisoners eat up with typhus who just needed some more ammo to complete their "justice dispensation"?
