The Gun Run

The first race of the year for The Gun Run will be April 4th in Ellerbe, NC. It will be a 5k center fire biathlon. Check out www.thegunrun.us for more info and tickets. I have more planned for the year as well. Always great to see FAL files members running and gunning!

Second race will be June 13th at the Clinton House Plantation in SC.

In to RO! How many FALers are attending, and what's the most difficult rifle shot? I may just being the old iron sighted girl out of retirement for this one.

I'm anticipating shoulder surgery and several months recovery, so I'm 95% sure I'm not going to make it. I was looking forward to to more R-n-G's this year but not in the cards it doesn't look like.

With luck I'll be rehabilitated in time for RGBC in August and try that again.

Glad you two will be coming, sorry about the surgery Tak. I haven't finalized my stages yet but the furthest shot should be about 250yds. A guy with a G3 and irons passed it last time.

I am just following a trend I started last year, losing weight. That includes the carried load. My knees just don't work like they did.

I carried a SCAR 17 for my first one. Heavy rifles during long distance treks are something you young folks can do. As much as I like my FAL (L1A1), my AR Mk12 clone is lighter and 1Ĺ MOA more accurate. That and 5 mags of 5.56 is a bunch more ammo. I even got a new, lighter pistol to use this year. It is 14 ounces lighter that the CZ 75 I ran last year.

Eeben, as long as you give us 30 more seconds on each stage, I might be able to place respectively.

Looks like we will have a FAL divison this go around. Possibly 7 FAL shooters! Good tune up for the FAL shoot in Georgia.

Bonus points for a suppressed FAL? We could have at least two - but they're pretty ridiculously long though.

That's what she said.

This FAL challenge is going to be fun. Am I the only one running in short shorts and boots?

Depends on the weather. If it's warm enough I'll go short shorts and trail running shoes. Otherwise it's the good old woodland camo BDUs.

I've lost track - does a full course of fire get published before hand, or is this match shot blind?

Nevermind. It'd help if I read the rules!

Quote:
The course of fire will not be posted prior to the race. This is to challenge you in the moment. Expect to shoot rifles to 200yds and pistols to 50yds with minimum round counts of 40 rifle and 35 pistol.
So carrying 80 rifle and 70 pistol should do me?

Yeah that should be plenty, you are a good shot so you might get by with less.

Unrelated to training - you want radios for the ROs? I think I have enough for everybody after that last radio-heavy Legion match. Might as well out them to use.

Or is cell service great there and you have no comms issues at all?

We've used cell phone with zero issues except Nutt spamming the group text. So we don't really need them.

I think I will bring all of mine, JIC. 2 GMRS and 2 VHF/UHF. That way I can log the contacts when people call me on the radio. "Hey TAC, do you have....?" Killing two birds with one stone, yeehaw.

Nah - just shooting groups to test my mods before pulling the 10x scope and zeroing the Aimpoint. Didn't care where the groups hit then, but now the Aimpoint is dead on at 200 yds.

Just under three weeks to go. Gotta get the trash talking going.

I have a muzzle device similar to yours on my AR. It makes the RO's jump if they are standing in the wrong spot. I'll bet that one is painful but effective.

Got all the shirts in for the FAL guys. I think kotengu will be the fastest runner but Jcorns might be the most accurate, Stimpy will give them a run for their money.

Foot injury and, likely related, hip pain have been keeping me off the streets.

But I am ready to limp around in a big circle for my shirt!

While I am hoping you do get better and heal fast, your slowest time will still probably twice as fast as mine. For all the progress I have made in conditioning, I still haven't learned to run and distance. The best I have been able to do is about 3.2k in 45 minutes. Checked with my doc last week and he said I could increase my max target heart rate, so that is what I am working on now.

Got a new pair of Salomon trail shoes. Comfortable as all get out and supportive. But the tread pattern makes a soccer cleat look like a deck shoe. Rifle was zeroed and function checked. But will confirm again after the deep clean before I leave for the match.

Biggest concern now is the hotel situation. Reservations made and just hoping the place is open when I leave.

I hate to break it to you...

4k in 45 minutes is really pretty GOOD !

With no gear I was running 5k in 35 minutes last summer. However, I am probably 10-15 years younger, 40 pounds lighter, and taller with longer legs. I'm built for running (but still suck at it mostly).

You have made awesome progress so be proud. You are giving younger chaps a run for their money and must be made of some pretty stern stuff !

Fixed it. I shouldn't post late at night. I am doing 3.2K in 45 minutes on my elliptical. And I matched it on the track with 8 laps (2 miles). I have been able to hit 4K (8 laps) in just under 1 hour on the flat track around a football field a few times but not consistently. And all were done unencumbered except for a bottle of water, my cell phone and blue tooth buds for some traveling music. Up until recently, I had a faster and longer stride on the elliptical and that pace was significantly faster than on the track. They are both now about equal so I am hoping my actual course pace has improved instead of the elliptical pace slowing.

Since I have already satisfied my original RNG goals of (1) finishing on the same day and (2) finishing while the sun was still up, I have set even more difficult goals. The one for the Gun Run simple: If I start in the AM then I need to finish before noon. If I start in the PM, then I need to finish before quitting time.

County leadership freaked out without any understanding of the mitigation measures in place and were able to exert enough political pressure on the land owner to have us cancel at 7:30pm the night before.
