I was curious about these and bought one. Read that hackberry is similar to elm. I think elm was used sporadically in Mauser rifels here and there.

I don't know if Garand guys like hackberry or not, but so what. These have dark stain on them. I think I will just leave this stock like it is, put it on something and see what happens.

Utility grade stock for a utility grade M1 Garand Rifle. There are no butt plate cleaning kit holes though.

Im glad someone finally found something that a hackberry tree is good for.
The only other tree I’d rather not have on my property is a Chinaberry.
Stock looks like a great value, Ive never considered using hackberry wood for anything.

My son has a set on a Garand he picked up, the dark finish does not soak in well, so any little ding or scratch reveals the white wood underneath, seemed strong enough, but cheap finish wise. Thanks for this post otherwise I would have thought they were some cheap Chinese stocks!

If it was Chinese, they might use catalpa wood or something like that.

Utilitarian is good. I got away from the military-stock-as-fine-furniture aspect.

Exactly. I thought hackberry would be too soft for use as a gun stock. I have an M-14 NM stock made of maple and it is bizarre enough. (It is still in the original plastic "shipping" bag and has never been installed. Will need glass-bedding from a professional glass-bedder.)

I have heard gunsmiths call the M1 and M-14 birch stocks "apple crate wood". I'm guessing because they are old "walnut only" fans. They'd probably have a stroke seeing a Garand stock made out of hackberry.

Looks like a picnic table. Some stripper, Chestnut ridge stain and a few heavy coats of Helmsman matte spray urethane will fix that up right.

Well, I was going to leave it alone, but I got so curious that I stripped it so see what was under the dark stain. It's never going to be walnut or birch, so I will let it be hackberry. Not pretty is it. It will look better when it's complete and not sitting on concrete, maybe.

I agree with Tex, liking your new refinish job Mebs. It looks like Oak I think, could use a bit more red or chestnut for me.
Anyways, much better, reminds me of the gray laminate stocks someone makes.

Got a set of Garand wood made of Beech? or Birch? that I took off my old Blue Sky and replaced with walnut. Anyone know it this stuff is worth anything?

Yah I thought it could use a little more red too. I tested some stain with red in the channel and thought it would come out orange if I used it, though.

Me too. The "test pattern" I recall looked something like a target to me. It came on after "High Flight" played across the screen every night, usually around midnight or so.

That is exactly what came to mind when I saw the stock. Old time TV workers might remember convergence. Now I am feeling old.

This particular M1 is cobbled together out of parts and has a Fulton .308 barrel.

That is a fine looking rifle.

How tight is the receiver lockup, and does the barrel contact the stock?

Thank you.
Receiver lockup is tight. I used a trigger guard with worn lugs instead of trying to adjust the stock. If you remove the trigger group, the rifle doesn't fall out of the stock if you turn it upside down. It takes a little effort to pull it out of the stock.

I don't think the barrel touches the stock. I'll have to take it apart to be sure.

Thank you. That Garand has a timing issue when loading the en bloc that I am sorting out now. I blew it off for a long time because .308 was no longer cheap, so I just shot .30-06.

What did you use to strip the original finish? I used oven cleaner which worked on removing old stock finish in the past, but not the CMP Hackberry stock finish! Just sent you an email!
What top coat or oil you use? Look very nice!

CitriStrip spray. Oven cleaner and Purple whatever did not work for me either on that one.

For finish I think that one is Minwax special walnut stain then Tru-Oil. I like Tru-Oil because it actually dries.
