Just a disclosure - while the Luxembourg contract chapter in the 2nd edition has about 4,600 words and 29 images, spread across 14 pages, there are no videos...

Hi Goose, I too would like a Signed copy, when the book comes out, please add me to the PM list. I understand the best would be to visit the publisher's page, but for reasons that, if you are interested, I can explain you in PM, I prefer not to follow this way. However I strongly wish this second edition, because I could not get the first one at the time. Thanks.

Hi, Goose.
Already contacted (you?) the website about ordering. Will try to get a couple other non-web guys to order, also. (Although, they usually assume friends just get to borrow mine.) Will it be as heavy as Ars Mechanica? I had to add a post to the bookshelf for that one! Thanks

It won't be as heavy as Ars M. ! However, the second edition will be somewhere between 300 and 400 pages and over 600 illustrations - considerably expanded from the 1st edition. Thanks for the interest in the book. |

To all that read this - about 1/2 of the book (by page count) has completed layout. Other chapters are complete and waiting for layout by the publisher. BUT, I am holding some chapters back as I am still waiting to get some neat stuff from sources in Europe. Was on the phone with the publisher the other day and we agreed that we will not set any artificial deadlines to complete the book and will wait until we think we have exhausted all of our information sources... It WILL happen... ...AND it WILL be worth the wait... ![]() |

First - congrats on the Lux !
Second - thanks for the interest - things are coming along nicely and I can just barely see the light at the end of the tunnel - but there is still LOTS more stuff to do. A big milestone is that the monster 62 page, 140 illustration, 28,000 word Parts Breakdown chapter has completed layout with the publisher. A total of 206 pages have completed layout - out of what will likely be ~ 350 pages or so (compared to 200 pages in the 1st edition). Most of the contracts chapters are complete and 7 of those 10 chapters have completed layout. As far as input from owners of the 1st edition of the book, or from rifle owners, about the only feedback that I can receive at this point is from anyone with original sniper rifles and OIP or Meopta scopes. The Sniper Rifle chapter will be one of the last chapters to be completed so I can still receive input on that stuff. It WILL happen... ...AND it WILL be worth the wait... ![]() |

Update: April 10, 2019:
The original purpose of this thread was to solicit feedback of the first edition, and to receive any new, interesting information about the FN-49 from the board members. Well, the comment period is closed ! All chapters are now complete in regards to the writing/editing phase. Only a few (tough) chapters are waiting for layout with the publisher. After layout is complete, there are still a number of post-layout tasks to be performed - page numbering, figure numbering, cross-linking, index generation, final proof-reading, etc. The publisher has begun early coordination with the printer to determine tentative print run dates. The first edition of the book was 200 pages and 300 illustrations. Counts are not final for the second edition but right now it is over 400 pages and over 1,000 illustrations in an all-color format. The latest forecast for publication is now "Summer 2019" (but keep in mind that summer goes until September 22 ![]() For those interested, check out my publishers March 31, 2019 update on his FN-49 book web page for the latest status and periodically re-visit that page for updates as the book progresses toward publication. The original forecast for publication was "Spring 2018" - we are going to miss that by about 15 months, but the delay made it possible to obtain more information resulting in the addition of about 100 more pages and 400 more illustrations to the second edition. Thanks for the patience. It WILL happen... ...AND it WILL be worth the wait... ![]() |

When the book is published, put me on the list to buy one. It'll make a nice companion to my Egyptian SAFN 49.

The publisher and I are hoping to wrap things up by the end of June/early July - then it would just depend on what production slot we get with the printer and binder. Too soon to forecast an "on-the-street" date but it's getting closer !

FYI - The publisher has updated his web page with the latest info. The entire book has completed layout and it looks and reads great. We are now performing final reviews. It is nearly done...
If you visit the publisher's page, read the text at the top, then scroll down to see a few sample pages. Thanks for your patience. It WILL happen... ...AND it WILL be worth the wait... ![]() |

Well, a couple more weeks of final reviews, proofreading, etc. I have spent 45 hours so far on what we call the v2 review and should be able to finish this stage in another 5-10 hours. Then, the v3 and final review will take a bit longer...
Then, we go to pre-press and then after that it all depends on what slot we get with the printer and binder. Patience... ![]() |

Well, first, keep in mind that the page count has gone from 200 to 460, it's in color, and the paper is going from the 70lb stock used on the 1st edition to 80lb stock, AND, it's been 15 years since the first edition. So, the price will be going up from that $46 price back in 2004.
As far as a price range - I can't answer that as Anthony (the publisher) still has to negotiate with the printer/binder. After that, he can sharpen his pencil and determine a price. All I can say is that this book is longer than his Mauser book, and will be printed on heavier paper. The Mauser book retails for $68.95 on his web site, so... I can't really say anything else as pricing is his decision. I'm just the guy that wrote most of the 150,000 words in the book... ![]() |

LATEST NEWS: The publisher has set the retail price at $73.95. He will be offering a discount from that price for a limited time for pre-orders and early orders (amount and duration of discount unknown at this time).
I will post in this thread when he is ready to accept orders. Also, as mentioned earlier in this thread, I will PM the same information to everyone that has posted in this thread. The book will be going to the printers soon... ![]() |

Latest News: The second edition has been sent to the printer and printing and binding are expected to be complete between Sept. 6 and Sept. 13. Also, the publisher has posted additional preview pages here: https://www.fnbrowning.com/book-fn49...t-military-rif
Here is the latest news directly from the publisher - note his mention that the discount offer is limited: Update August 12: The pre-press phase is now completed and all press proofs are accepted. I was delighted with the new color format and overall look of the book. I personally think it sets a new quality standard for us, but also for collector books in general. There is no doubt in my mind that the goal of producing the definitive FN-49 book was accomplished. This book will be timeless. The book is now in queue for printing and binding (100% U.S. made). We have received an updated completion and shipping period between September 6 and September 13. I plan on doing quality control while we process the pre-publication orders and ship those out in order to avoid delays. Those that ordered first, will be shipped first in chronological order. I will halt the pre-publication sale once the books are near completion, so please do not procrastinate. We will not revert back and give discounts to late buyers. The book is already a great value and the pre-publication offer is just icing on the cake. All pre-publication buyers will receive autographed copies by Wayne Johnson, the author. We will not furnish autographed copies to the trade (book dealers). Signed books will only be available from Wet Dog Publications directly. For those who still wish to participate in the pre-publication sale: You can use the coupon codes on our website but please note that multiple book orders will ship combined once the new book is available. Go to https://www.fnbrowning.com and use the coupon codes listed below to get your discount. $10 discount on the new FN-49 book, use code: SAFN $20 discount on the new FN-49 book and any second book, use code: AFN2 (this promo excludes the following books: Figments of Ocracoke and Winchester Model 1895) $30 discount on the new FN-49 book and two additional books, use code: AFN3 (this promo excludes the following books: Figments of Ocracoke and Winchester Model 1895) Thank you! THE BOOKS HAVE ARRIVED AT THE PUBLISHER !
The publisher expects to ship most of the domestic sales books on Friday. Right now he is engaged with his QC process (he examines EVERY book to check for damage or other printing/packaging/transport issues before shipping to customers). The sale/discounts mentioned in the previous post will remain active through Friday (Sept. 13) and then will be withdrawn. The book is a great value at the full price, but getting the book a bit cheaper is even better so if you have considered getting the book - now is the time... I have had an advance copy of the book since Monday. While I have been working on the text for more than 2.5 years, and have been looking at some of the completed chapters for as long as a year, it is a whole 'nother thing to have a copy in your hand - everything looks MUCH better in print than on a computer monitor. This book just blows the first edition out of the water. Both myself and the publisher are VERY pleased with how the book looks, feels, and reads. The book weighs a substantial 4.3 pounds and is printed on 80lb coated glossy paper. The color photos jump off the page. The layout of the book is just super - thanks to the many hours put into it by the publisher (Anthony Vanderlinden). Well - 32 months after project start (and just over 2,400 hours of work) - my part is done. It's now up to the readers to get your copy, check it out, then come back to give a review.
