Maybe not a complete mutt, butt dammit my para mutt still has some work left...

Super sexy carbine.

Hard to beat that, especially with the Type C stock and NBC handguard's.

This one was initially built from a Dan's Ammo Imbel kit back in '03ish. Since then it's evolved through a few different configurations including a short barrel Para at one point.

I went back to basics with a rebuild last year and like it in this config better than ever. I also finally solved a chronic vertical stringing problem with a barrel replacement. So after 13 years of screwing with it, I finally got it right.

Currently it has an 18" Austrian STG-58 barrel on an old (circa 2002) FAC/Dan Coonan receiver. The flash suppressor is a CNC Warrior Phantom. The trigger, handguards and lower are Imbel. L1A1 safety and folding rear sight. FSE folding CH and mag release. Penguin butt stock. Tapco SAW grip. DSA railed top cover and gas piston. American Defense RECON-SL-30 QD scope mount. Bushnell 1-4 Throwdown PCL illuminated reticle AR scope. Homemade aluminum carry handle. Surplus M-14 sling. Gunkote finish.

It's not even the right sling for the rifle. There is no right way or wrong way.

Oh wait, you mean the latch is is backwards so that sling tension might release it. You're right. I need to fix that.

Agreed.
I like the yellow markings, too. Did that on an AK years ago.

My mutt. Started out as an IMBEL parts kit and I had gotten a Coonan receiver on which to do the build. Very little of the original parts kit remains.

Upper is IMBEL from the latest group buy. Also IMBEL are the charging handle, carry handle, buttstock assembly, recoil parts, lower receiver, frame lock assembly, axis pins, magazine release and pivot screw, trigger guard, NBC handguards, and PG nut. Only some of those parts are from the original kit. Lower receiver has one set of internal lightening cuts, and the return spring tube is the lighter stepped type. Pistol grip is an FN USA SAW grip. Barrel is a Steyr cut down to about 17" and on the end I have an FNC combo device. Top cover is an FN hiduminium charger guide type. Bolt and carrier I believe to be Australian. The remaining fire countroul parts are FN, as are most of the remaining parts; I had the IMBEL ones from the kit in there, but the trigger pull was awful. I swapped the parts out for the ones that came in the Belgian M3 lower I bought from paco a couple of years ago and it's much better now. I also opened up the rear sight's aperture to 5m, so it's like a ghost ring sight now, which I like much better than the narrower peep type.

I may swap out the frame lock parts, too, with the ones from the M3 including the vertical lever, which would work much better with the DSA extended selector than the horizontal one. Still working on setting it up to use QD swivels and a couple of parts still need to be refinished. Mag is a blocked Israeli one, but right now I have a blocked FN hiduminium magazine on it, since it weighs almost 5 ounces less. The black finish of the magazine also matches the furniture in a way. I also really like the look of the grenade sight gas plugs, so I may get one of the refinished ones DSA sells and swap that out with the current gas plug.

Right now, with the hiduminium magazine it weighs about 9 1/2 lbs. It's under a metre in length.

Paramutt:
HBR muzzle device
Argy barrel
Israeli light barrel hand guards
HBR hand guard spacers
Coonan receiver
Argy bolt carrier
Belgian bolt
South African para top cover
Imbel Lower and internals.
HK rear sight assembly
HBR ambi safety selector
DSA para stock
Imbel pistol grip.

ETA: HK sights have been replaced. I had high hopes for them, but they disappointed me.

Let's build some more steam here...Decided to turn my StG carbine into even more of a mutt (originally in post #33, this thread). OAL 16” Steyr barrel (was cut when I got it) with a cut-down, perm-attached Stolle. AIM Sports MLok handguard (I love this thing), ACE receiver adapter block, and a Carolina Shooter Supply aluminum stock. I’m especially proud of the buttplate, which is a Choate 1/4” flat one that I heated in the oven and placed in a homemade jig to bend to the curvature of the stock…reamed the holes to match up, and installed. Looks as though it was made for it…not too bad for a former AF oss-see-fer. Original Imbel para top cover from GP’s buyout of EAI (nose was cut; aft nib still intact), with an Argy carrier and MilSurMonkey spring set(!) Put the original StG bolt in there, works like a charm. Pulled ye olde original StG lower off and put in a safe place, along with the HG, bipod, carrier, and front swivel (plan to put a QD cup on here). Lower is from a G1 from which I removed the recoil tube for the ACE adapter…Argy para rear sight. Overall, she weighs a meaty 10.4 lb with a full Moses mag, but is balanced very well. The CSS stock provides an excellent LOP for my 6ft height, though I may add a folder in the future…unsure. Last step is to ream the gas port to 0.140” (she needs it, as I discovered upon the first range visit) and get the barrel/gas block refinished with a bake-on…probably gonna go matte black on that one. And I will put an FSE paddle mag catch on there once I get it refinished...that is all.

The lates Muttzilla, century inch receiver, Aussie lower, Imbel bolt, Pretoria carrier, Rhineland .45 ACP grease gun mag conversion, William's fake gas block, holland rear, and lots of WECSOGery. Just waiting on the m3 mags to show up to start the feeding trials.

Well it's been damn near a year since this thread was touched, so I reconfigured this rifle just to have an excuse to post here (not really). This is the same front end from the post immediately above this one, just a different back end. They say the best way to keep your spare parts is in the form of another complete rifle, so here we go...

- member 'bloodoftyrants' converted Rem 700 barrel (16" short-gas) topped off w/ OSS muzzle device/suppressor mount
- Imbel receiver
- Aussie bolt & carrier
- Brit lower w/ Enfield/BSA guts
- para rear sight
- Aussie stock w/ ridiculous grain (courtesy of Brad @ Gunthings)

The majority of the front end components, as well as a few of the lower parts, have been QPQ nitrided, courtesy of member 'ironworker' facilitating thru Wolfe Firearms (thanks JD!). Love it or hate it, I like the handguard... sort of a classic back end w/ a modern front end. Truth be told, I had an extra lower, plus other plans for that Kaiser lower (prev post), and it made me sad this stock was locked away... it really called to be put on a rifle, so that's what I did. The purists may mock me, but hey, opinions and a$sh0les, right?

Nice stock. That looks way better than that buffer tube UTG stock.

Cool Mutt! I love that it has a Rem 700 barrel.
