Early model K2 Questions/Optics options?

I've got a K2 on the way to me and had some questions, and figured I should reach out to find out what others who undoubtedly know more than me with regards to Daewoo's thought. The gun on its way is one of the very early imports with the disc shaped rear sight screw mount (as opposed to the more dome-ish shape usually seen) and the mismatched optic mounting point height on the upper, with the carrier pinned to the piston, and I believe (but haven't confirmed) 1/12 twist barrel.

A couple questions on these. First, the practical, are there any optics mounting options for these uppers? I was looking at a Stormwerkz low profile mount, but was told they only fit the more common version.

Second, anyone know anything about the reason/history of the upper receiver and internals changes, or any real advantages/problems between the different versions? I've seen youtube videos from Daewoo Rifleparts from a few years ago explaining what the differences were, but can't really find any info on why the changes were made or when (or if any old versions remain in ROK service/info on retrofit programs). How uncommon are these early versions relative to the bulk of K2 imports?

Finally, any advice on what *available* parts should I pick up as spares? I was thinking gas plug and recoil spring, is there a reason to keep a spare piston? Anywhere have the flippy-lock recoil assembly in stock?

-thanks!

I have the same issue. Stormwerks made a custom mount for this application. If you ask nicely, I'm sure they will do the same for you. Alternatively, you can just use thin washer or two on the front position.

What is your serial number and does your takedown lever have the safety lock?

It's a 3040XX and does not have the safety lock, imported through Stoeger.

Mine is 304757 and also imported by Stoeger.

As far as the rail goes, I'd just get some washers to level it out. The height difference is pretty small.

Also, if you can find one of these red-dot optics snatch it up! These work really well on the K2.

I thought that the K2's and AR-110's were imported by IA CO, while the MAX II's were imported by Stoeger!!!

I also thought that all the K2s were 1/7.3 in. (1/185mm) like the later IA import I have (although I've heard that the early ones were 1/12, like all the later DR200s).

I'm looking forward to your twist info...

My rifle has a 1:12 twist. I'm 100% sure because I measured it. I shoot more 55gr. M193 ammo than anything else so it works out great for me.

Thanks for the info, I'll check back with Stormwerkz about the rails when I can double-check the measurements in person, anyone happen to know about what size washers would be best to use? Still don't have the gun in my grubby little hands yet but want to get a jump on things. Anyone happen to find any history or details on the uppers change?

Sadly it looks like the RV2 red dot is solid gone from everywhere on the internet, though I've got a spare Strikefire II I'll probaly throw on if I can get a rail on.

I don't remember much about my K2 but I miss it. It had the 1:7.3 twist and would keyhole 55 gr bullets like nobody's business.

Must have been well worn out! The 1:7 should have no trouble stabilizing 55gr. and the longer 62 gr. bullets. Usually it's the 1:12 twist can have some issues stabilizing the 62gr. but is designed for the 55 gr. bullet length.

Hey Parallaxbill. Your old K-2 is still in good hands...mine. It is a sweet shooting rifle. I added the after market half safety and a lower top rail. Other than that it is the same sweet rifle that you sold me. I believe that you sold it on your website. I would have been registered as m58 there. Thanks again.

Here's what is in my files from several years ago.
Dan

K-1 Direct gas system 1:12 rifling

K-2 Folding stock, gas piston 1:7.3 rifling

K1A1 Wire stock, direct gas AR-15 bolt is interchangeable

MAX-1 Folding stock, early version of K-1

AR-100C pre-1994 K1A1, direct gas

MAX-2 Folding stock, early version of K-2

AR-100 pre-1994 K-2

DR-200 post 1994 K-2 w/ T-hole 1:12 rifling

DR-300 7.62x39 K-2 w/ T-hole

K1A1, Max I, and AR-110C are all the same gun, just different importers who brought them in under different names.

K2, Max II, and AR-100 are all the same gun, just different importers, same deal as above.

DR-200 is the post-ban T-hole .223

DR-300 is the post-ban T-hole 7.62x39

Hey, that's good to hear! Glad you are happy with it.

FWIW, regarding the must be worn out comment. It was far from worn out.

Glad to hear

Happy that there are some Daewoo lovers around. I have two. An AR-100, bone stock, except for the 90 degree safety (a recommended upgrade) and a DR200 that has been modified with pistol grip and folding stock. Nothing wrong with a DR200 as long as it gets modified.

Stormwerkz is carrying the torch now. Not too much else offered by anyone on these, which is a shame. I am constantly searching the internet.

I have had 0 failures on any parts, but I only put maybe a couple hundred rounds through either gun in a year. Would prefer to slow roast than to flash burn my nice guns. Some guys like to burn out barrels just as fast as they can. I try to take care of my stuff.

I do want a "K2" again, but they definitely seem to bring the premium. So I make myself content with what I have. It's only a "number".
