Axe project

Soooo...I decided I needed to be able to make axes and hammers.

First things first...we need a decent drift...

Wat went wrong...

As of today.

Ignore the upper rainbow, this is a heat line from the quench heat only, and believe it or not has precious little to do with the overall performance of the axe.

If you look just below the aquamarine in the lower color line, that line is the boundary layer between the O-1 tool steel (the lower section) and the 15N20/1080 'damascus' section. The fact that this is so hard to detect makes me very happy. I am very hopeful this line will be a thing of beauty once the etching is done.

In hindsight I should have forged the drawn section out to a flat top and a more pronounced beard, but I was more concerned with getting the welds to take on this first (second?) attempt.

In other news I made a draw knife late this evening and managed to get both tempered before the wife needed to put dinner in the oven.

I am going to make a time lapse of making a smaller draw knife. I made 2 larger ones and both were too springy for what needed done. So, let's see how long it takes to make another.

The handle was literally a piece of firewood at 3pm.

So you should be able to see the damascus clearly now, and on the BP stamped side you can see it layered on unevenly so when I ground the final form it got weird.

On the O-1 tool steel section, you can see a darker section, this is the truly hardened part, so we got a bit of a hamon, though that wasn't the plan.

Pay attention, folks - THIS is how you make a build thread!

I am no longer amazed by your skills as I've known you so long. It's a given that you can do all this cool stuff.

What I am constantly amazed by is the never-ending limits of my ignorance. After almost every video of yours I watch, I realize I had no idea how much went into what is seemingly a simple task. Very cool stuff here!

You know, had you attended UT in your former misspent youth this wouldn't be such an issue!

I saw the shot and couldn't resist taking it! Hope all is well....
