Finally landed one - Military contract overrun Mossberg 500 MILS

One of my issued weapons while deployed to Iraq was a Mossberg shotgun. I was VERY fond of that shotgun for many reasons, especially during snap TCPs and while clearing buildings. I had always wanted to get my hands on one, or build a clone. Multiple years ago I leanred that Mossberg sold a limited number of US military contract overrun 500 MILS shotguns around 1999/2000, with a USA serial number prefix. The asking/selling prices for these shotguns is insane ($2K+ for NIB, used examples $1K+). I finally landed a solid example with original box, for a very reasonable price. It has been shot some, which is fine with me, as I plan to shoot the snot out of it!

Regarding “Chink Shotties,” S&W 3000s are excellent guns (Howa manufactured 870 knock-offs).

Cannot say that I have ever fired a shotgun off the bench. I’ll give it a go for why shits n’ giggles.

Nice. I like my 8 shot Mossy 500. It was a standard shotgun but Numrich had a barrel and tube conversion I did to it many years ago. I like my 870 police magnum as well but never had any issues with the Moss and prefer the top safety. I have to confess though that my current "bump in the night" shotty is an older Ithaca 37 Game and Fish Dept. trade-in that will slam fire. I never liked it until I cleaned 40+ years of caked grease and dirt out of it. Man that old Ithaca is slick now and will lay down buck as fast as you can shuck it.

Simple answer... we would patrol (mounted) through Baghdad and surrounding areas in Bradley IFVs, where we would abruptly close off a section of traffic (front and rear). Soldiers would dismount and physically search the vehicles for VBIDs, weapons, bombs, bad guys, illegal $$$ ect., while the Bradleys provided 360 degree overwatch.

There is no reason to have a Chinese shotgun. Theyre within a few dollars of a used po-po 870.

And I like that Mossy bigly.

People ask $1-2k for those?

I'm assuming there is a known serial # range?

Nice group! Your rifle sights don’t hurt. I’ll give it go next time I had scrap together some range time. Should be fun!

Get you one of those little rubber inserts so you can load up a dozen of those mini slugs. You won't regret it. They hit hard. I have one of the shockwaves with a +2 adapter. Think it holds 9. Keep it loaded with buck. It's fun.

Hi,
Nice score!

I had to wait a whole year for my ordered LH Mossy 590A1, but it was worth it.

Fitted it with a Magpul stock and a Hogue rubber fore end...love it.

The Magpul fore end had to many sharp edges for me.

I'm also against hanging things off my combat shotguns!

Mossberg every time!

I keep a Mossy 590SP at home for close in and personal work. 20 inch barrel, 8 shot tube and heat shield up top.

high brass # 4 heavy field loads will do the trick and cut down on over penetration.

Well,

Nice score. Reminds of walking to the DFAC at FOB Falcon in OIF V and see a SPC-4 clear a Shotgun, M-249, M-4 and M-9 at the clearing barrel. I guess his squad screwed him and he was the "Gun Porter of the day".

Made me laugh as I cleared my M-4 and M-9.

Dang thread made me break my 8-shot Mossy 500 out the safe to fondle a bit. Heck, I might even shoot it some.

Nice! I didn't know that the military Mossberg 500s were sold as well. In the process of getting a Benelli M1014 marked M4 to convert it to the proper military configuration. Looking forward to seeing how it shoots.

I did find it on Gunbroker. I grabbed it with a $649.99 "Buy Now." I have been looking for a few year, waiting for an opportunity to buy one for reasonable $$$.

There is one on Gunbroker now, but the asking price is insane. https://www.gunbroker.com/item/841223663

Yep, only cleared M9 and/or M4 or Shotgun. My M24 and M107 stayed in our section's "office" when not on mission (i.e. retrofitted connex).

Officers clearing their M9s made for occasional entertainment. Rank didn't matter. Watched a female Major rack her slide and then drop her mag at the clearing barrel, pulled the trigger before I could get a word out. Oh man, was she embarrassed and pissed... It was awesome!

Not Iraq, but Afghanistan... had same weapon systems minus the shotgun.
We did inherit a couple M14s though.

I just saw your post. First off, thank you for your service.

Secondly, that's a nice find. There are not many 500 MIL guns floating around that isn't actually in an armory somewhere.

The last several years, the only gun that Mossberg has been selling to gov. accounts are the 590's.

I'm a mod at mossbergowners.com and I can only recall one other mil contract gun ever showing up. Yours being the 2nd that I have seen. You should check out the forum. Lots of good gun guys there. Not just those into shotguns.

Congrats on winning this, I was going to bid until I observed that you were going after this.

Looking at the stock, it looks original, but missing the swivel. I'm not sure how difficult it will be to find an original replacement.

Nice score!
