Man,

I bought a SAR-1 and 2 15-16 years and was wondering what they are going for now days. Gunbroker has some listed at $1100+ is that realistic?

500-700 is about right if not converted ..

If a SAR1 they are know for trigger slap so that would be something to bring up in a a ADD ie different trigger or no slap when used ..And if the gun was properly converted ie bayo lug and threading ...The 223 model had issues with mags for sure as long as it has a Weiger with it should be ok

The 223 model and 545 are a bit less commen then the x39 so that is one +

But these again are still post ban 94awb era gun so not as pricy as true pre ban . Only selling point is they took double stack mags out of the box no century monkeying with the mag well

I had one. I thought it was quite a gun for the $300 I paid. Ate everything I fed it. Trigger slap is easy to fix with a dremel. Gas block was straight, not all were.

I have all three and have had a few more examples of all three pass through and like them for the money I paid (less than $300 each). The only issue with any of them was WICKED trigger slap with two SAR2s, easily fixed, and supposedly poor geometry of the SAR3 hammers that I changed out.

I hit these right, getting Weiger mags for the SAR3s when they were cheap, and buying 5.45 ammo and mags when they were REALLY cheap. Like $14 for four brand new mags in a case sealed in plastic.

Interestingly, my current SAR3 is more accurate than a 106FR I paid $900 for. Also, Galil (steel) mags can be made to fit and function in the SAR3. I did a little welding and filing on a rough Galil 50 and it runs 100% in my SAR3. You never know when you may have to repel boarders and need a lot of ammo on tap.

My SAR 1 is one of my most accurate AK rifles. Always has had a bit of trigger slap though; albeit not enough to spend the time to fix that. I've had it since 2002 I believe.

I remember when those things were boringly common at gun shows- $329-399 for a 1, 2, or 3.

Took it in for Virginia Safety Inspection today.

Had to twist the inspector’s arm to inspect the damn thing.

He was giving me some mumbo-jumbo about how he couldn’t get it on his lift because it was too low – which was bullshit.
I explained to him that he could get it on his lift, and that if he didn’t think so, I would go home and get my own damn jack, and put it up on my own jack stands blocking his bay.

I show up with that car and every shop around here acts like its got leprosy.

There are a million things wrong with that red Camaro (including the driver) but none that should fail it for Virginia safety inspection.

He got it up in the air and was running around under it… “Oh, this new… and THIS new…”

He asked me who did it, and I explained to him that I had done the entire front end because I’M A MECHANIC. (Yes, fair readers, two-year program in high school in the 70's and worked at the job for a year until I quit when the boss refused me a $0.25/hr. raise).

Anyhow, inspector guy got all wide-eyed and changed his tune after that.
Dude even apologized to me after all was said and done. But geez.
I tried to tip him $20 after all was done because the whole thing seemed to stress him so much.
He refused the tip and gave me a goofy bow. Said “I respect you… I remember you… See you next year.”
So much drama.

Battery sounded real weak when I started it this morning. So after I got the inspection I took it for a romp around the northern part of the county to charge the battery.
Back end felt real squirrely on I-66 at WOT in 5th gear.

Got home and passenger-side rear tire was basically flat.
Bead hadn’t broken loose, but less than 10 PSI.
Valve stem was dry rotted, and leaking badly.
Probably will be flat again by tomorrow.

Good Lord, I just did a gonebroker closed auction search and saw a NIB SAR-2 had sold for $1027! I have one I have shot just enough to confirm I fixed the trigger slap then put it back in the box. I called myself squirreling it away back then for my kid’s eventual 18th birthday. I also have two 4-packs of mags new in plastic, a Romy folding stock, and a case (2160 rds) of 5.45 to go with the deal. Looks like it may be an expensive present in a couple of years!
