WTK: Flashlight mounts for shotguns

What flashlight mounts are you using? I have a few Rem. 870's around the place, and wanting to mount flashlights on them.

I want it to mount on the barrel/magazine tube, not the forearm.

I see the Elzetta mount, and like it but it is kind of bulky. But if it's strong, I can get past the bulkiness.

I'd like to hear what others use?

Mine is far from the best set up as I put it together years ago. Today's lights are far better than anything we had back then. I used a Surfire 6P and a double clamp to mount it under the barrel. Clamp was made for a flashlight to clamp on a shotgun barrel.

I have never used any gun in defense of my home and I am 67. Those that shoot shotguns with lights a lot at the range tell me if you buy a cheap light it won't stand up to recoil. I take the light off when shooting my 870 and put it on when it gets in its place for night.

The new lights will probably last better.

If you have a mag-tube that extends beyond the forward movement of the handguard, consider attaching a picatinny clamp.

Then you can position the light however you want.

If you use a thumb-screw or lever-lock attachment for the light, you don't have to leave the light on the gun 24/7. Also allows you to remove the light to do things like looking for your wife's car-keys or garage card that got dropped in the parking lot without having to carry a shotgun around at low-ready while you man the search.

A lot of flashlights today are smaller shaft-diameter than the 1" diameter that is common on inexpensive detatchable rings. A 3-foot strip of electrical tape makes a functional shim to fill the ring.
