Mid-west FAL shoot. Owensboro, Evansville, Henderson area. July 13th.

I'm having a files gathering/shoot here at my place on July 13. I have a nice, safe gun range and I can set up some fun stuff to be competitive, but mostly just a fun shoot and get-together. Shoot some stuff in the afternoon, drink beers and tell tall stories in the evening. I have plenty of room for campers or tents and I will provide the BBQ and the bonfire. We also have a pool for swimming and a lake for fishing, so wives & kids are welcome too and can stay entertained if they don't want to shoot.

Update #1 - May 28 (edit July 6):
After discussions with “the committee” which is currently me, a couple of other local falfilers who know my home range, my shooting buddy/neighbor, and most importantly Blondzilla, we will try this! The date will be July 13.

We will start the day with a safety briefing at 10 am Central time. Try to get here around 9:30 so we can load up and ferry down to the gun range for a 10am start. This hopefully gives those coming from Louisville, Nashville, etc. time to get here without leaving in the middle of the night. If you get here late, DO NOT walk toward the sound of gunfire, as when you come over the hill on the gravel lane you will be downrange. Call me and we will have a ceasefire to get you to the range and/or Blondzilla will be up at the house and can call me.

Shoot until roughly 3 or so. I can have BBQ timed to be ready by 3, but it can sit for a couple more hours if needed with no problems.

Three shooting events:
1 - A steel plate pistol match. 8 steel targets for time. Any center fire handgun. Shooter is limited to 7 rounds or less in the first mag and as many as they want in second mag. This will ensure a mag change is required to shoot the COF.

2 - A steel plate rifle match with V-tac barrier. Still for fastest time and will take 12 hits on steel. FAL only. Irons or optics.

3 - The Rifleman challenge. I stole this idea from going out to the Oregon shoot last year. Rifle held at low ready. When the timer goes off, you must hit a steel plate at 100 yards in less than 5 seconds. Lowest time wins. FAL only. Again, separate classes for irons or optics.

Anyone who wants to come and does not actually have an FAL (which I doubt), either me or someone will loan you one.

Depending on how many show up and how fast things go, we may be able to shoot each stage multiple times, OR just do some other plinking and shoot other guns.

Some time in the 3-4 pm range we will call it a day for shooting and begin to eat, drink, and be merry. Guys that do plan to drive home will still have time to do so without being too late. Any that want to bring a tent or camper are welcome to stay over and party in the evening. A few of us I know will, and I have plenty of room for primitive camping. You are welcome. There are also plenty of hotel options within 20-40 minutes in all four directions if you prefer.

Other items of note:
-This will be at my home which is a drama-free zone and I expect it to stay that way. We will have a bit of competition, but it is only for fun. No drama.
-We will be SAFE. No loaded weapons unless you are on the firing line ready to shoot. Whoever is acting as range officer for your shoot will tell you when you can load your weapon.
-No drinking until after you are done shooting. We WILL drink before the day ends I'm sure, but if/when you start drinking, your gun handling stops.
-There are a few guys coming I already know personally who will help out, but everyone is expected to be an RO and help watch out for each others safety. If you see a problem, say so. If your RO (or anyone) yells STOP, point your weapon at the ground and stop.
-Bring eye and ear protection, and a lawn chair.

Update #2 - June 18
1 - Per the excellent suggestion of yovinny, we can also have a swapmeet/yard sale as well. Bring your un-needed stuff and bring your checkbook. I know we all have both and there might be some good deals there for trade, or at least something you want and can save shipping costs.

2 - I have all the necessary tools to build, and we will have not only myself, but other experienced FAL guys there (by that, I mean guys who actually know something, and not just my WECSOG skills ). Need to screw one together? Let me know. Yovinny is also bringing whatever stray locking shoulders he has and I ask you all to do the same. If we do screw a riFAL or three together, we will hopefully have the correct sized LS on hand and be really done that same day. Yovinny is also bringing the tools to make a para nose cut and will use my shop equipment to do so if anyone needs that done.

3 - On logistics, I do not have room at the gun range for many vehicles and it is most of a quarter mile walk from the house/parking. Be sure your guns and gear are in bags that can be sat on a trailer or in a UTV bed for a short transport. I will have both to ferry us back and forth to the gun range, and tables and a trailer to lay your gear out on when you are down at the range. Also, bring a lawn chair!

Update #3 -July 6:
COF with photos now on page two of this thread. A local member came over this morning to screw a rifle together and tried out the COF. I will have a couple of non-FAL friends shoot it this week as well, and so I should have any potential "issues" de-bugged well before next Saturday.
Please note that my gun range is on the back corner of the property and in the lowest elevation of the farm. The forecast looks really good now, but we may still have some rain earlier in the week and may still have some mud to deal with, so wear appropriate footwear.

We will not actually stop and go eat until 3pm (or later). I will have BBQ and beans. Blondzilla will have potato salad and a couple other members are bringing side dishes. Bring your own snacks as needed and your own drinks please.

Update #4 -July 7:
I will have a Thompson machine gun to shoot after the structured events. Yes it is a legal, transferable machine gun and yes my neighbors are all used to the sound of gunfire, including machine guns. If you want to shoot the Tommy gun, bring your own new factory 45ACP brass cased ammo. No reloads.

We also have a handful of "maybes" as well as a couple of my local friends who will shoot but are not falfilers, plus at least 3 wife units.
We do have a pool too for those who don't want to shoot

Boy, are you in for a surprise. Wait and see how long it takes before you have 50+/- shooters camping out, tossing brass, and raising a bit cain.
You'll have a grand time

Great idea.

Count me in.

I can bring some portable AR500 torso targets on armored stands.

I can plan around different dates. The 13th 20th and 27th are all good for me.

I think I'm within 2 hours of you. I know me and my son would enjoy it...my wife as a Brooklyn eyetie "don't do the camping thing" though. Just don't know my schedule that far ahead since I'm back into elevators.

Yes, Owensboro Kentucky

The location is near Owensboro.

Here in Owensboro we believe (right or wrong) that we are the only place on earth with that strangely spelled name. Spelling is not our strong suit here. It used to be Owensborough be we changed it for simplicity.

Where in MI are you? I'm in Berrien County (just north of South Bend, IN). I would certainly like to make it. Maybe we could carpool together?

If I have time, I could brew a beer or two for the trip, but certainly growlers or crowlers would be in order. Lots of microbreweries around me.

For the record, I'm about an hour or so from Invictus. Anyone traveling a long distance, I have a private campground y'all are welcome to stay at. It's primitive, but it could save you on a hotel if you want.

I love horses...mostly because they terrify me.

Fastest time with 12 hits win....and not exactly a "drop 12"

You will need to bring at least 12 boolits for that stage

Well my job comes to a close this Sunday, so I will be freed up to stay late on Saturday of the event. Talk about bittersweet

It will be especially easy-peasy for you bro. We will be shooting at your two plates through it and I know you have hit those many times

Depending on how the loading of the moving truck goes, I may be driving through your area that day on the way to TX, and would want to drop by and say hello to other members.

I should be leaving MI on the 12th and stopping around you that night. Moving truck will have my stuff, but I will have my fals

Been years since I've shot three gun or USPSA style competition. If I make it it'll be interesting to see how old habits and extra pounds work into the equation. Knees don't work like they used to.
Still hoping to make it.

What time will the festivities end? I'll be shooting my FAL in a competition in Iberia, MO that week, which ends on the 13th. Afterwards I'll be heading to Writh-Patterson AFB in Ohio instead of going straight back to CA. Depending on what travel times look like and what time they do results/awards on Saturday, I may be able to make a southerly detour and hang out with y'all, although almost certainly it would be after the shooting is all over, unfortunately.

Don't put too much thought into competing. My real intent is just a fun gathering of filers, focused more on beer, BBQ, and BS'ing rather than an actual match. The competition part is just to add a bit of structure to the fun.

I'm hoping to be done actually shooting by mid afternoon, but several of us will camp out and be around all evening. Hope you can swing by.

This evening I got the entire gun range bush hogged. I'm hoping to do so again just before the 13th for aesthetics, but we will still be GTG if not. Tomorrow evening, a bit of Round-Up on the graveled area at the shelter house and we will be golden.

For those that are coming and don't already know where I live, PM me for the address and also everyone please let me know:

"A" are you bringing anyone else with you?

"B" are you planning to camp and stay over?

If we do screw a riFAL or three together, we will hopefully have the correct sized LS on hand and be really done that same day. Yovinny is also bringing the tools to make a para nose cut and will use my shop equipment to do so if anyone needs that done.
If someone has the tools and knowledge to help me get a stuck combo device free I'd be appreciative. Thing's frozen on there and the timing is a bit off where it froze, which is kind of annoying. It must have worked a tad loose in transit to me from Terry's place in Oregon and then somehow froze in place (rusted, maybe?).

I met up with member el Tigre yesterday who loaned me a "ton" of additional steel plates which I will get set up in the next week or so.

I need to make a few additional hangers, but "we have the technology" for that and after today, I am on vacation until the 15th

Unfortunately I won't be able to make it unless my situation changes.
