AR-15 A2 Is This a Pre ban AR?

This rifle is a recent acquisition at an estate sale, along with several other rifles. I wondered if this is a pre-ban AR? If so, how can you tell? What other comments do you have that will increase my knowledge about this rifle? On average, what value does it have today? Thanks in advance for any comments,

It is a preban built in the 1980's. This model replaced the SP-1. Just google "Colt Sporter II" and you'll find all kinds of info. I can't help you on value but I think you'll be pleasantly surprised. But don't sell it. Shoot it and enjoy owning it!

Its an early one too....the so called "transitional" model with the SP1 type lower that they were trying to use up inventory of perhaps...note the lack of fences on the RH side mag well exterior...its slab sided. Has an M16A1 upper with A2 barrel and handguards.

I would sell that mongrel of spare parts. Would be willing to give you a few c-notes to help get out from under it. Seriously it would fill a gap for me so am a tad jealous. Nice boom stick.

Actually, not an M16A1 upper receiver. A1 receivers never had a brass deflector. This type of receiver is often referred to as a C7 pattern (Canada used it while we used A2). Personally, I prefer the C7 pattern to the A2.

Also, thank his type of receiver sporadically popped up throughout the Sporter II production run, along with A2 receivers. Just because the rifle has a C7 receiver, it doesn’t guarantee that it is early vs. late.

Many of these were stripped down for parts. Ban states paid big $$$ for the lower receivers, M16A2/earlyA4 clone builders paid big $$$ for barrel and furniture (Colt A2 profile barrels w/ bayonet lug and early gas block are rare), and other parts pulled some cash as well (especially the C8 receivers for C7 cloners). Sporter II rifles were the red headed stepchildren of the world so they were easily sacrificed.

Now, there are few left. I have this exact rifle and I shoot it often. Again, I prefer the C8 receiver to the A2 receiver. Though not a true military clone, it is still an excellent AR rifle they deserves respect.

FALmeister: That is one of my favorite Stoner family configurations; an A1 style upper with the round handguards. If that rifle has a chrome-lined chamber and bore, I would not sell it.

What is the rate of twist marked on the barrel?

It has a 1/7 twist gov’t profile A2 barrel. No M4 feed ramps. Thin blade FSB (later A2 has thicker blades. Chrome lined bore and chamber.

As Lockjaw stated above...it would fetch big coin here in MA. We have some silly laws about pre/post ban stuff and this is an easily verifyable pre-ban. Either an FFL in MA would buy it from you to make a tidy sum flipping it or one of the serfs here would be fortunate to get it.

If you anyone wants to get an understanding of the market here in MA for ARs and AKs, check out the classifieds here: https://www.northeastshooters.com/xe...tt-rifles.211/

A sample: $1K for a complete lower with A2 stock...$900 for stripped. These are known as Pre-Healy recievers. On 7/20/16 our insane AG ruled all AR "copy cats" post 94 were illegal to purchase going forward from that date. So this person bought his in 2009 so they are still OK. But nothing allowed since unless they are fixed mag receivers.
