Brit Troopers update the Challenger II Tank

Well,

I havent seen some of the updates they have done but they really look to update a Tank for the infantry support roll in the urban environment. I trully think some of the updates are commonsense but TACOM sure as hell wouldnt let us do them.

TUSK is the lastest M1A1 update and this looks to be somewhat better in my opinion.

Urban environment? In what country and to do what? Tanks are for war but with enough cameras and other gadgets they work great against the citizens.

It looks like nothing on the tank is really suited for Iraq or Syria

Some of the stuff looks kinda "Harbor Freight" to me.. the exposed cameras. The oil drum-to-storage locker thingy. The folding little step thingies. The blade is probably a good idea, but they've been on tanks since Patton. The cameras, like the 360 degree one is great,as long as they could drop it and replace it in combat, cuz that sure as hell is going to be a focal point of a light machine gun. Rely too much upon it and you're blind when it dies. Or somebody will develop a device or weapon to coat it with something that blinds it... think Mark Rober's glitter bomb video.

Even a good splash of thick mud would obscure it.

The urban environment is probably England when the citizens get tired of getting screwed around over brexit and they take to the streets en masse....

A great observation, probably exactly what they're thinking too.

If it would work in Mogadishu, during Black Hawk Down, then it will work in America.

That is the measure, and an accurate test it is.

Camera's are cheap to replace, if shot up, not so much GI's.

The fold down step ups, same thing, will reduce needless injuries.

Tanks, if they wish to remain working tanks and not flaming wrecks, NEVER go anywhere without infantry, taking care of the infantry, its about damn time.
Those fold down thingies usually last about one winter up here.
The cams are a good idea, just exposed and very prone to failure.A tank has to plow right thru a woods or hedgerow...branches will wipe those right off in minutes. They'd have to be made similar to periscope prisms, where you could drop on out and stick one back up in a second. The old drum thing? Nice to keep gear in when nobody is shooting at you. Otherwise,in combat? Every enemy GI with API will be popping holes in it thinking its full of diesel. So much for your porn stash.

I agree, everything would have to be made tank and GI proof, but the concept is a good one.

Maybe someone reading this thread knows, those oil drums on the back of Russian tanks, were they for fuel or gear storage???

Fuel storage in non armored drums is insanity for sure.
Would not care to be the infantry following along behind those with rounds coming in.

The redesign again is for light infantry support in URBAN combat zones
Read London, Birmingham, etc during Riot events like those several years back there.

The Police were incapable of establishing order when the Blacks took to the streets

Gman perhaps has better thoughts on this but one buddy in London mentioned to me last year there has been some discussion of military deployment when the coloreds act up again

by my thinking they are looking at domestic deployments

The Russians used a long drum on the back of the turret for gear storage. They used drums 'clipped' to the back of the tank for extra fuel. They could drop the exposed diesel fuel drums at will, which is a great idea for carrying extra fuel. And the idea was to use the drum fuel first...

You've hit the nail on the head. It seems Britain has become a nation of sheep.

It's a nice tank.

I think some of the latest and greatest tanks have been taken out by by the latest and greatest ATGMs and IEDs. Not sure if suicide cars have taken out tanks or not.

Honestly the Brits are down to a battalion or so of tanks. Less than 70K in the whole British Army. And they are talking of building overseas bases, lol
