What's Your Favorite M-14 Shortened Barrel Length?

All these shortened barrels on the M-14 has me thinking to ask the class: "What is your favorite shortened barrel length? I see that some of them give the owner/operator more trouble than they expected.

Also, what muzzle brake do you guys prefer? Do some of yall go for the shorter length or most reduced recoil/blast?

I'd like to know if yall prefer the 18", 18.5" or 19.25", something like that. I know that you are not supposed to cut a chrome-lined bore as it MAY,MAY cause flaking of the chrome. I would not want to to cut an undamaged, serviceable USGI one anyway.

TIA,
Jarhead

Socom was and I’m sure still is running suppressors on their standard 14.5 M4 s for the simple reason that it allows them to communicate better with each other in a firefight.

Short barrels are too fukkn loud... I prefer the standard barrel length M14.. short barrel M14s sound like a stick of dynamite going off

M4s are nasty loud especially if you are in a skirmish line standing slightly in front of a group of guys firing them off all at once to your right and left.. painful

Was NOT a fan of the SOCOM 16...Just too brutally loud.

I had a 18inch Scout for a long time and loved it. Perfect length as the standard was just too darn long for my needs.

if my memory serves me correctly ...........

when the Springfield M1A SOCOM 16 first came out it was known for ripping the rim off of cases, somewhere in the neighborhood of 85% of cases

apparently there was a dwell time issue (well, we know now)

a fully adjustable gas system would have quickly solved this issue or at least lessened it

I am certain that a Springfield M1A SOCOM 16 would greatly benefit from not only a fully adjustable gas system but also a Delta P design Brevis II suppressor, with those two additions it would quickly become a favorite go-to fun gun

I am always toying with different length barrels for my M14 builds.
Took this photo on my bench yesterday.

Looking over a few barrels from the shelf and trying to decide which to use on the last 4 receivers.

Top to bottom.

1. LRB/Criterion 6.5 Creedmoor 1-8 22".
2. Bula ultra heavy 6.5 Creedmoor 1-8 22".
3. Bula ultra heavy .308 22".
4. Bula med NM .308 1-10 nipped and crowned 20.5"
5. LRB all states compliant .308 crowned 19".
6. SEI standard weight nipped and crowned 17".

Close as I can come is a 16" barrel and a 50 rnd drum. Notice the addition of an extra charging handle on the left side. I have the same type drum mag of my FAL's.

Thanks for that picture Brother Art. Nice layout and explanation of what they look like. You cannot tell on the Bula website of who's on first.

18.5" is the readily available shorter barrel length out there. Criterion makes a lot of them.

Bula had a 19.25" barrel as well. I have one but haven't shot it yet.

16" just seems to short. If you need a 16" barrel then you're better off with something smaller like an AK or AR.

Stainless? Chrome-moly? Chrome-lined? Nitrided? 4 groove? 6 groove? USGI profile? Medium Weight? Heavy? Fluted?

TIA,

Okay, okay. I'm going to ask you the same thing Cindy Lou Who asked Santy Claus when she caught him taking their Christmas tree: "Why? Why?"

In this configuration with the 16.5 barrel and ACOG, using M118 LR this goofy thing will give most standard 22" barreled M1As a run for their money.

I'm thinking about my SOCOM, and rebarreling it to 18", what all does that take to convert from 16" system to an 18"?

Screw in a new barrel and the muzzle device with sights of your choice. Easy squeezy.

Been playing in the shop this morning. Changed out the barrel from 16" standard weight to 18.5" medium LRB. Ready to go out an burn up some more Atomic ammo.

Late to the party but really no shortened barrel is my "favorite" length. Totally ignored the 16" SOCOM but did buy an 18" when began shipping. It's a decent rifle but when shoot my M1a/M14s want to shoot small groups or longer distances which till purchased the M1a Loaded in 6.5 Creed generally took the National Match or Super Match to both field and range. Have plenty of lighter and less expensive MBRs to lob average groups though know quality of barrel is more important than length most times but never felt like chopping a premium barrel or ordering a shorter premium barrel for the M1a/M14 rifles. May try an 18.5" 6.5 build some day to see if able to get more handy rifle and retain accuracy coupled with every inch of downrange retained velocity possible.
