Done.

Given the current popularity of SA or RA builds, you'd think a sticky would be an easy decision

RA 11357 bolt,carrier and lower.
Barrel matches the lower as well and still has SA serial numbers and proof marks un scrubbed.
Appears to be all SA built gun has Pretoria proof marks.

fussbudget,
Thanks for your post #1 here in this thread.
So just to be clear, does the original serial # match on carrier, bolt, lower, AND barrel? If so, congratulations!
Those with all matching RA and SA serial #'s are few and far between.

All matching South African and RA serial numbers.
If I could post pics here I would but it seems I can't post them directly from my PC.
Photobucket has been really more of a pain in the backside lately, slow or just not working like it used to.
The kit I have is one from back in the 80s or early 90s.
Waiting on a type 1 receiver to come in to assemble it.
Still a bit of the original baby poop paint on the handguards and magazine.
Has the grenade launcher sight and gas plug.
Happy to know its a good one to have.

Thats a keeper man since its pre-embargo and displays Lyttleton factory markings and the Rhodesian Army ones.

I have one for the list South African R1 lower, Sanitized, Littleton SN:240514

Rhodesian Army SN :RA5419 electro-penciled.

Bolt and Carrier Pretoria Proof marks Lyttleton SN: A1084 Rhodesian Army SN:RA5419 embossed

It was built by century on a hesse rcvr, with a 21" Belgian 1958 proofed barrel that I have my suspicions about regarding originality to parts kit they used but you never know with Rhodesia they used what was on hand.

I have since rebuilt rifle on an Imbel Gear Logo upper with an Imbel 16" barrel, also used the stock and carrier from a falcon para conversion kit and made my own take on a Rhodie 50.63 with some influence from the Anti-Poaching unit weapons thrown in. I forced the SN on the falcon US carrier for looks no mistaking that for legit on down the road. Still waiting for my no-go gauge to come in mail so I can get correct locking shoulder in her. Should be tomorrow ,then this will be my truck gun for my K5 Blazer.

My DSA type 1 upper receiver came in today so I installed the mag release and the bolt hold open pin, installed the charging handle and fitted the pivot pin that came in today as well.
Having to massage the rear locking tab on the upper so the upper closes all the way but I figured there would be some hand fitting.
Its locking but the take down lever is not going all the way down so a bit more filing will have to be done.
The barrel indexes at 11o'clock so I will have to hit my buddy up for his FAL tools to cinch the barrel down.
Will check the headspace and see if my original locking shoulder will work OK
I'll do all that at his place.
Guess I'll baby poo the thing in the spring when it warms up.

This is not a gunsmithing thread, BUT NOT SO FAST WITH THAT FILE !

The take down lever is NOT supposed to "go all the way down" on a new receiver! There's supposed to be some margin for wearing in. Read thru this whole thread : Not closing 100%

The correct position of take down lever is shown in this pic:

That's exactly where you want it to hand time. About 90# of torque should take to top dead center.

Don't mean to get in your business, but I'd hate to see you mess up your build of a really nice, rare kit. If you have any gunsmithing questions - just start a thread here in "FN Files" or "Gunsmithing" subforums. Knowledgeable folks will be glad to chime in to help.

Not to worry TraFALgar
I do appreciate input from others and I will take any and all advice so thank you indeed.
Here is the lever position when closed currently and its really tight.
with the barrel screwed in and bolt and carrier in its stiff to break it open.
I figured being a new receiver I would rather have it tight.

Kinda late to the party, but I hadn't really looked at the RA marked parts on my rifle built from an R1 kit in a long time. Most of the parts were in VG cond. and most of the paint must have been removed prior to my possession ('05-06) - just a trace here & there. In those heady days, R1 kits were very cheap and mostly viewed as a source for misc. FN Herstal parts. My kit's barrel (FN Herstal mfd) had major issues in the last 5-6" so I built a non-traditional carbine from the kit using a NIW Imbel 436mm para barrel, but I digress.
Anyway, here goes:

Bolt: late FN pattern with sand cuts (kind of uncommon) - UM stamp before Sn & UM electropencil; U over crossed flags proof
Sn 240384/ RA17123

Carrier: FN/Belgian proof mark
Sn 27229 - almost unused, no other markings

Lower: FN contract lower with internal lightening cuts
Sn 4577/ RA17297

A very eclectic set of parts made for an equally eclectic and awesome short rifle.

Would be very interested in bolt or carrier with RA17123 or RA17297

Picked up my first FAL last month and was surprised to see a RA marking on the lower. Guy i bought it from said it must be an import mark so I went with it. He also "fixed" a loose gas tube by wrapping the treads with electrical tape. It was missing the pin.

Lower: RA0636 / 16122

Lowers:
SA 325541 / RA 6621 Para [SARCO Humper]
IMBEL No Serial No. / ZA 20941

Bolt
SA 307199 / RA 9144

I also have a couple of scrubbed bolt carriers, however, will have to look with a magnifying glass to see if I can still detect any RA / ZA enumerations.

Hi all, well I do not know if any of these have been listed but here is what I have left of SA/Rhodie rifles with said parts on them--

1- All original pooped rifle --I hesitated to scrape any off to better read numbers but can if asked nicely..

Lower-RA10169,30xxxx(there is either white or ground area UNDER the paint and looks to wipe#after the 30...-RHS below sight),sanitized grind in selector area.
Stock is long plastic pooped up with 'UM' molded in stamp LHS
Carrier-has crossed flags,'OP',240245,'UM',(RA)193(5?)07(very faint)
Bolt-'OP',336063,RA12238 engraved on the bottom
Barrel-'OP' ,W, 308391--(what is interesting is it MAY match to lower but with lower #s mostly wiped.?? BOTH start with 30..paint is uniform to whole kist..??

2-Refinished SA/RA FAL on Coonan

Lower-RA6959,325994, no UM or grind mark found
Bolt/Carrier-Match 233021 BUT NO other proofs or RA#s-- suspect Imbel???
Barrel-'OP',W,294538
Stock-BADASS wood with sectioned repairs in back, repairs up front,poop,bondo,dents---- HAS CHARACTER

***think I will have to poop this up a bit to match the wood stock..

3-'Rhodie 'Para'-

Lower- CONVERTED from std lower to para, tang ground out(from what I can tell tang snapped. Cut for Para rear lugged cover hand cut into the recoil plate, works but still not quite deep enough I think..anyway,markings--
RA0818(faint stamp under black flaked paint-hard to read),16025 on lower LHS,'UM' (faint) LHS lower between takedown lever and back of lower, ALSO has sanitized grind mark behind 'R' stamp-odd..
Barrel-'OP',337209

4- Para trooper- only RA marked part on it is the original Para lower, RA7197,326058-- I find no grind marks,no UM, nothing else...sorry.

***if I can find pics of what other Rhodie stuff I had I will post numbers if for nothing but nostalgia..... since I only sold all my other SA/RA stuff here I bet you guys have them anyway...

Updated the spreadsheet with inputs from Stoney, Vorpal_weapon, Striker024, Gravelface1, pistolero1911, Cessnapilot89, EinheitElf :

https://www.dropbox.com/s/7eapubx67d...3%27s.pdf?dl=0

Note: On EinheitElf's post, I assume when you say 'OP' that you mean the 'P in oval' proofmark of Pretoria. I denote that as '(P)' in the spreadsheet.

CORRECT!!!- apologies, should have done it your way..

It is water under the bridge at this point BUT for the sake of the list, I can go back and try to list the rhodie numbered stuff I had in the past, maybe it would help with someone's search for bits? I basically only have sold my fal stuff here on the Files... Example- I USED to have a Rhodie lower #'d RA0229 AND the lower was #'229' ,stuff like that if I can find the pics scattered all over my various drives....

Let me know and i will see what I can add for posterity and maybe the members I sold them off to??

No apologies necessary. That's just the shorthand convention I chose to use - yours is as good as mine!

That sounds like a lot of effort for you, but if you decide to do it, I'll be happy to add them in the spreadsheet. Matching bits at this point is a long shot, but it is still possible. I traded a SA lower to Gravelface1 recently that matched a bolt he had.
