Deer Skull

Hey guys, I'm in the process of doing my first European mount with the deer I shot last November. I've been drying it outside. I've got all the flesh cleaned off of it, and the bone is a nice white color. The problem is that the skull still smells like rotten meat. What do you suggest to get rid of the stench?

I have a skull I'm working on. YouTube said to boil it in laundry detergent and OxyClean. I assume that pulls a lot of the oils and scents out of it.

Did you remove all of the brain tissue? Do you know how to do it with a small tube on your air compressor nozzle? I can explain if you need me to.

Ants or beetles. Either will remove anything you missed in short order. Of course, this works better in warm weather and you can put it outside without some dog carrying it off. I have a large fenced in back yard so it works for me.

I like to have my skulls "bugged" as well.

But, to get rid of the smell leave it in a bucket of diluted bleach water for an evening.

Plenty of videos on it on you tube. Boil in borax/bleach to get all of the tissue and brain matter out, then put a bleach paste on it and let it sit for a day or two and then rinse again.

I macerate mine. NO BLEACH. DON'T BOIL! Bleaching will cause the skull to eventually flake. Boiling will soften the skull too much. Just my experience. Masceration is the next best option to Dermisted beetles. Plenty of articles on masceration of skulls.

I use my hot water pressure washer with a turbo nozzle to clean mine. I skin it first,as quickly after I kill it,as possible. Then, clamp it to a stable object and blast it with hot water. The turbo nozzle does a nice job. You aim it into the hole at the base of the skull, and it spins the brain into mushroom soup in seconds.Pours right out. I haven't had to boil one yet to clean further, but I'd do the oxy clean/detergent were it needed.
I always write on the inside of the jaw bone, where, when and how this skull came to be. 50 years from now, whoever ends up with it will appreciate the info. Use a sharpie.

Send your next one to this guy:

https://beetleskullcleaning.com/

Or a bug guy more local to you. Nothing looks better or more natural than a beetled skull.
