Thank you. I have some. Been buying PPU 150g SP blaster stuff for the brass to load those with. It's ok but I would like to find some affordable 54R loaded with a heavy HP bullet that the outdoor range here deems acceptable and has more like match quality results.

Been buying this for 30-06 :

Was hoping to find something similar for 54R.

Does Lapua currently load 7.62x54R? If so I’d imagine its pretty spendy but also fantastic.

Just looked around and there are quite a few vendors with 0.311" 174 grain SMK's. Make sure and get dies with proper size expander and pull the handle. Will give you the option to tailor your loads and save cash.

Does it absolutely have to be open tip? I've been trying the LVE Extra Match ammo since I can't get D166 (I eventually want to load my own) for my M39 Mosin-Nagant. 200 grain. I think it has a boattail, but I'm not positive. It has produced excellent results compared to any light ball that I've shot.

His local range “bans” FMJ. Yep, boat tail on those match 200gr Extra bullets.

Yeah, my local range will not allow FMJ so I'm stacking Privi 150g SP for the brass and to blast with but sure would like a open tip match to punch paper with.

And yet I see people paying $2 a round for black hills 308 175gr bthp and saying how much of a killer deal that was.

They do, but most loads imported with .308” bullets.

The S&B is no exception either. Neither is the PPU Rifleline I buy for reloadable brass. I measure .308 on both.

I'll do limited quantities only above one dollar. In this case I knew I could do cheaper if I waited. $1.30 a round for the S&B match is still stiff IMHO but doable. $2 bucks per round is out of bounds for me.

Are you pulling the bullet to measure them? The .310” bearing surface diameter may well be INSIDE the case neck of the loaded cartridge.

I thought about that. I should have mentioned my measurement was on cartridges that were not pulled down. Will try to do that today.

I think you will find only Lapua and Norma use .308” bullets in 7.62x54R.
S&B and Prvi both show .310” or .311” bullets loaded in their 54R cartridges. I never found a .308” in one.

I pulled down one round of each. The S&B was easy .310. I could not get that on the PPU but rezeroed the calipers and then it gave up .310 also.
I used my kinetic puller. rather than the collet puller. Of note the S&B came out easy one whack, bullet shiney and unmarked. The PPU took three hard whacks, bullet scored I assume by insertion or extraction.
