CZ 550 Swede - should I?

I have two CZ550s in 6.5x55
Both with leupold scopes.
Was thinking that the 24Ē barrel is a little much for walking around and was debating cutting it down to 20Ē

I just hate to modify such a nice rifle.
Still, Iím also thinking of buying something else like a tikka to have a shorter Swede, so why not, right?

I have a CZ550 in 6.5x55mm with the 24in barrel. Even if I had two of the same thing I would not even consider cutting the barrel down.

If I wanted a shorter barreled 6.5x55, I'd just buy a new gun. The Howas come with a 22in barrel (I have a couple in 6.5x55mm that I'm very happy with) but, then again, I would have preferred a 24 or 26 in barrel on them too , so I guess that I'm giving my biases away when I tell you that I wouldn't cut your CZ550 back...

But the rifles are yours, so my preferences should count for zip...

For me it would depend on what conditions and game I hunt with the rifle and how much velocity I would loose by cutting down the barrel. I don't have any experience with the 6.5 Swede but I own several other chamberings in various barrel lengths.

One of my favorite woods calibers is the 9.3X62mm. I have a CZ FS in that chambering with a 20" barrel. In the past I hunted with the same caliber in a 24" barrel. My hunting range limits with a 9.3 are 250 yds and under. The 24" barrel didn't gain me much at all and I am very happy with the 20" barrel.

When I use a 270, 30-06 or 300 win mag I am usually hunting open fields, large clear cuts or long tote roads. I tend to be hunting large bodied deer and moose with these calibers. I prefer a 26" barrel in these situations and I don't notice the extra barrel length.

Yeah,

I didnít think the Swede would lose too much velocity for the animals in central tx.
It is rare to get a range over 250 yards out this way as well.

By the way, in all fairness, I should probably also point out that I have hunted with a Swedish M94 carbine (with a 17.75in barrel (or thereabouts)) for most of my life, both in upstate NY and here in Colorado, and have been very happy with it's performance. I just don't take 1000 yard shots, if you catch my drift...

While I wouldn't cut the CCZ550, that's somewhat irrelevant because, as I mentioned, it's (they're) your rifle(s) and you should do what makes you happy with it(them).

And, I admit, planned use can be an important part of that 'decision'...

I think I'd sell it and buy the 20" FS version off Gunbroker or post a trade.

Sell it, trade it, buy a shorter one, or keep it as it is, but don't cut it.

If I found a CZ 550 6.5x55 in the used gun rack, I would be very happy to buy a 20" FS or a 24" Classic, but I would not buy one that was cut unless it was selling dirt cheap.

Actually, I did buy the 20" FS, couldn't help myself, it followed me home.

I would have been equally happy with a 22"-24" Classic or American.

B'sides, if you cut it, it will look funny, and the animals will laugh at you.

Might be an advantage, shoot them while they are distracted by your silly rifle.

Do not cut the longer barrel. Do not.
