Some of you probably are aware that my wife works for a large organization.

The size of the organization notwithstanding, she has but one "employee" who answers directly to her.

His name is Ed.

Ed's wife, Susan, and their two children, were visiting family in Ohio today when their vehicle was rear-ended just a few hours ago.

Susan was killed.

Their two children, Matthew and Peter, were severely injured.
One now in ICU, and one with a broken pelvis.

My wife is accompanying Ed to National Airport as I write this.
How horrible and devastating a journey it will be... I cannot imagine.

My friends, I ask that you pray for Matthew and Peter, and for Ed, and for the care-givers, at Akron Children's Hospital, who are working so hard right now to save the lives of Matthew and Peter.

The elder child, Peter (16), will survive - a broken pelvis his significant injury.

The junior child, Matthew (12) suffered multiple injuries, including a brain injury, and is still alive.

Details of the accident are trickling in.
Best information now indicates family car sandwiched between two OTR trucks.

Matthew needs your prayers the most.

Gary--my wife was telling me about this one as it happened close to our home and I'm on the road.

Our prayers are out there--

But do know that the kids were transported to a VERY good childrens hospital.

It's amazing how it hits you between the eyes when a sadly common tragedy hits someone you know or, God forbid , are close to. I will remember that poor guy in the loss of his wife and those kids in the loss of their mom. Bless your wife for the help and comfort she is giving Ed.
Thanks for sharing this with us.

This is a shame - and a reason to give a wide berth to big rigs and try not to get yourself trapped in a pack of cars where you can't react.

As a child I remember a semi truck tailgating and hitting an Olds and seeing the 88 go airborne in the side mirror just outside Terre Haute when riding with my mother. Couple that with how many drivers cut maintenance to keep on the road hauling and cut their costs, run two log books and drive way too many hours to make any money and are, consequently, hopped up on "pep pills," and I think I'd rather they just took random shots out the window instead.

Thank you all for the prayers and kind thoughts.

Small update:

Word has it the driver had been on the road 11 hours... fell asleep at the wheel.
Smells of an independent driver if this is what happened.

Peter had surgery today to put plates in his pelvis.

Matthew had surgery to drill holes in his skull to relieve pressure on his brain.

Yes, there is a lawyer involved at this point. Although, I would be surprised if the truck driver's vehicle insurance policy will cover even 10% of the liability.

Best to he and his.

The truck basically ran over the Ford and continued beyond, striking other vehicles. The fire happened, and the truck became engulfed, at a point beyond where the Ford was driven into the rear of a second truck.

Peter's condition is improving.

Matthew's condition is stable, and although he remains in a coma, it is believed that he can survive.

Their dad has a blog if you care to know more.

Thank you all for your concern and your prayers.

Counselor,

I just saw this thread and had no idea the people involved in that accident on the Ohio TP were "friends" of yours.

I have followed this on Ohio.com (Akron Beacon Journal) website. Like Ricketts said, he lives just north of the site of the accident and I live just south. My shop is just about a mile from Akron Children's Hospital.

If I can offer any solace, Children's is one of the best pediatric trauma centers in the entire nation. Many consider it to be the "Cleveland Clinic" of child care.

Gary, .... if there is anything I can do for Ed or the boys,...I'm right here!

Just call!

Bob

On FAL Files issues...

PM won't work here or on sister board, AKFiles. I've tried to change my email here for years, the new address I request is "blocked" for some reason. .... needs to be .... wolfsburgbob@gmail.com

Peter's healing is underway. He is back in school. I think he still requires a wheelchair.

Matthew is out of the coma, and seems to be showing some progress toward the tiniest bit of mobility. The therapist has a game where they use a fishing pole to try to pick up a fish. I think the lure and the fish are magnetic. Mathew is not really able to catch a fish, but he seems to enjoy the game.

May God bless you all for your thoughts and prayers.

I just learned that Ed has an adult son from a previous marriage.
