Not wanting to hijack a different thread, what in your opinion is a great beer?

Any one else can chip in with your opinion also. However if in your opinion a great beer contains the word lite in it's name then you are wrong.:cool:

I have been enjoying the micro-brews for years.

I find I am generally pleasantly surprised.

No offence to Andy but I dont know why you are asking an Aussie about great beer? Ask a German or better yet a Czech. Czech is where beer was started. For me any Czech or German Dark Lager, Dopple Bocks are also very good.

Deschutes Brewery, Klamath Creamery, etc, all good

I will agree with Thorack.... If you want to know about great Beer's then ask a German or Czech... Can't really go wrong with either!!

BUT... (Have to put a plug in for other's than listed above)... It really doesn't matter.. cause WHAT YOU think tastes good for you is what you will like... whether it is a World Class Beer or something from the "Big Boxes" ...

I travel all over the world in my line of business... and what I might like isn't liked by others... and not only is the temp of the beer.. but the taste.
(I like Red Horse over San Miguel Pale Pilsen... both from the same company... when I am in the Philippines) - Yes that is a poor example but..

Point be taken.... All it really boils down to is YOUR TASTE buds... IMHO... But at least we can head you in the right direction!!!

In china I drink -Leu Tren Kinka like labatt Blue Light
Sing Taho is good too!
Good beer -- The best beer?? Hu,mmmmmm Yuengling ,Labatt, Molsen ,
Nothing Budwieser and The really dark beers ales dont appeal to me at all..
Micro brews are always fun to sample !

I used to keep a keg in an old fridge --with the gas and tap out the side -- seems every evening One of us would have to go and ''Milk the Cow " returning with a pitcher of cold beer --had to stop that Gained too much Belly fat !!

My taste in beers has changed over the years. As my palate has developed, different styles became more appealing. Here are a few of the brews I've enjoyed over the years with a few tasting notes. I'll try to list them from most recent favs to older.

FYI, I haven't yet developed a palate for trappist ales, so figure that into your opinion of my list of favorites.

Stone IPA - current hands-down favorite. Lovely hop overtones, but very smooth and well balanced. However, at $4 for a 22 oz. bottle/$10 a sixer and 6.9% ABV, this isn't a "daily" drinker for me. The Ruination IPA is even stouter at 7.7%, but I prefer the flavor of the standard IPA.

Widmer Bros Broken Halo IPA - this is the brew I usually buy these days when at the grocery store. Good bang for the buck.

Sierra Nevada Pale Ale - Not as hoppy as a true IPA, but a pleasant taste to me.

Full Sail Pale Ale - I tad more hop than Sierra Nevada and perhaps not quite as refined, but I still buy this one when it's on sale. I don't like Full Sail's IPA.

Avery Brewing Co. "The Czar" - a Russian Imperial Stout that sits at 11% ABV. A heavy, thick, winter-time-only brew for me. I can nurse a single 22oz bomber for an entire evening. If you don't care for Guinness, pass on this one.

Franziskaner Hefeweizen Dunkel - A smooth, unfiltered German dark wheat beer. When this was my favorite, I preferred it to any of Spaten's offerings.

Celis White - A white beer with a refreshing flavor and finish. I slice of orange (oddly enough), adds a summery tang to the brew. Used to be manufactured here in my backyard, Austin, under the supervision of the founder, Pierre Celis. Unfortunately, Miller bought 'em out and shut down the brewery circa 2001. Pierre's daughter, working with Michigan Brewing, bought the rights from Miller and resurrected Celis White (and a few other Celis brews) a couple years later. You can still get Celis White, but I now prefer Hoegaarden, Pierre's original white beer, imported from Belgium. I think the Hoegaarden is a smoother brew than the new Celis White.

Belhaven St. Andrews Ale - I enjoyed this one when I could find it on tap, but I don't care for the product from the bottle. Closer to an English-style ale than any other beers I like.

Negra Modelo/Corona - I wouldn't call either of these "good" beers, but I enjoy the former with Mexican food and the latter after mowing the yard in 100 degree Texas heat.

Clearly a man looking for an *expert* opinion .... ;) :rofl:

For me it is Tooheys Extra Dry or Crown Lager. Carlton Cold, James Squire (a micro brew that went commercial) and Boag's also rate well with me here. If you like a dark/heavier beer Tooheys Old can be chewed while drinking it.

Outside a couple of micro breweries in Oregon (where I went to the most) I never really found beers in the US that excited me.

Fosters Aussie beer imported to the US is now made in Canada. When I was in Australia in the early 80's I liked "Emu" Beer the best. Not sure if its imported here or not.

I was a huge German and German style beer proponent years gone by. As I aged, my tastes changed. I still like a brew with some body; but some of the one's listed are just too hard ta chew anymore ;)

I truly believe that one of..if not the best!, was our own Spatin's home brew. Pale; but not too pale..Solid; but not chewy...Flavorful without being flagrant about it. Had some at FF I and haven't found one to beat it yet. Shame it won't travel well ;)

A local micro started up a year or so ago. He makes a mean IPA but one or two is IT!! The flavor comes atcha with a club and beats ya into drinking it! LOL I might try it watered down with some Coor's Extra Gold..my usual "cool me down" beer :D

Here in the country we have a hard time finding a lot of the offerings that you guys have put forth.

Right now I am enjoying a Negra Modelo, however there is Bass Ale and Guinness along with some Heineken in the basement fridge. The wife likes Harp and she does have a point.

We did find out that the Molson Canadian made in Canada and purchased in Canada is far superior to the Molson Canadian that you can buy in the states.

Anything put out by Coopers can't be beat with a big stick. Particularly the Lager.

AND, they can be sourced in the US at your local World Market store!
(Along with Tim Tams, Vegemite and Bundaberg Ginger Beer.)

If you are into draft, try a Blue Moon floated on Guiness. It is rather refeshing & nearly as good as a Black & Tan...

if you get a chance, go to a "yard house" restaurant brew pub.
the one here in PHX has 140 flavors of beer on tap.
try a:
Chimay or Orval trappist ale,
a Nimbus Monkey shine.
if there is no yard house in your area,
Ive found that the Paulaner Salvator (Dopplebock) is awesome like Thorack said.

I"ve been making it since 1990 now and everyone LOVES it.

http://www.fosters.com.au/enjoy/images/vb_bottle.jpg .......VB is a fall back for many, I have consumed more than I care to admit. beats most commercial beers I have had in the US but rates lower on my scale than the ones I mentioned above .....besides it is from Victoria and being a New South Welshman that is a serious issue that is hard to ignore :eek: (OK....in fairness some of the other beers I love come from Victoria as well but they don't shout it at you from the label :rofl: :rofl: ).
