You can watch the market place or Gunbroker for the right deal. Apex also shows some in stock, here's a link :

Very cool site, thanks!

Gunbroker has pretty much dried up on inch pattern mags. Every time I've checked there has only been metrics available. The one time I did see inch the price was ridiculous.

You probably saw a 30 rd inch mag. The price on them is out there some what high.

Actually no, these were the standard, used, 20rd mags. I wouldn't even want the 30 rounders. I guess the lack of availability has to do with the fact that only the British Commonwealth countries did the inch pattern as apposed to all other nations that adopted the rifle being metric?

Another great site. They're fairly local also. But again, $45 per mag. Ouch.

Thats the price you have to pay for owning one of these rifles. How many mags are you looking for?

Common wealth rifles and FALs are not cheap unlike ARs.

The other option is to buy metrics and build up the tab....use a wire feed and find a good welder.

You have to order more than $75 I think. Then it's only $13 shipping. Call them and order some more before they process it. If you order more than $500 it's free shipping.

The graphic that Century lists as an L1A1 mag is actually a metric mag. Hopefully they just used the handiest photo available and know the difference between the two.

Yeah the best bet with Century would be to call them up and ask. In years past I've went to order off their website and they don't have it updated. Sometimes having in stock and not listed as such on the web and other times listed as in stock and they are out.

I got some of the inch mags from APEX. They were very grimy out of the box and needed a good scrubbing. Hopefully I'll get to test them out this evening.

Century Inch Mags

Just a FYI. Century will give you the dealer price if you have a C&R FFL on file with them. I do, though I really have not ordered that much from them. Anyway, I have four of the inch mags on order. I'll let you know their condition when they arrive.

I bought some inch mags from J&G last year, and they were all greasy and grimy too. I think ALL of the inch mags are from the same boatload, from the description of them, no matter what dealer they were bought from. Seems like all of the current crop of inch mags arrive dirty and greasy.

I have some I got about 10 or 15 years ago, and they were all clean as a whistle, but the last batch I ordered arrived all dirty and coated with some kind of grease. They weren't hard to clean, just took some time and work with WD-40 and a G.I. toothbrush. Like I said, I think that all of the latest inch mags have been from the same origin, wherever that is. Like maybe there was a warehouse or two full of them that all the wholesalers are buying from. Just my opinion, and in the long run, doesn't really matter where they came from, it's just nice that they're still being brought into the country.

I have a guess that these came in with the L1A1 kits that I/O was selling. A lot of those kits were from a 1964/5 Bermuda Lithgow L1A1 order. Mags are dirty but actually mechanically in good shape. A few have some surface pitting but when painted fills rate in. Bodies are nice and square, lips where they should be and the springs have factory compression.

Mine showed up yesterday. Pretty gross looking and filled with nasty grease also. Oh well.it'll still do the job once I clean the gunk out.

Inch Mags

Finally!!!! The four inch mags from Century arrived on the front door on 6 May. One looked brand new except for some storage scratches. The other three looked well used, but in servicable condition. Some corrosion on the springs and minor pitting on one of the followers. I've only cleaned one of the gunky ones and it now looks like it has many years of life left in it.

Bottom line: One in great shape; three look pretty well used but can be cleaned and should be more than fine.

Wish I could figure out the country of origin.

Home rolled?

I was looking at my L1A1 mag compared to a FAL mag, and of course, the obvious differences are noted, BUT, what I noticed was the similarities, especially all the top end geometry. feed lips cut the same, rear locking tab same size and location, etc., etc. I know that FAL mags will go right into an inch mag well, but there is always the wobble. Most of us want Inch mags for our Inch rifle.

Seems to me some prosperous soul, with good brazing technique, and a jig, could get a mess of "Inch Tabs" made and just take FAL mags (plentiful) and file down the silly little front metric tab, then braze on a new inch tabs??

Has anybody heard of someone doing this?

OH, I am GREAT with the ideas, but I will point fingers to someone else when it comes time to produce anything! :-) cause I got no skills myself, other than that brain the wizard gave me last year after that long forced march. Stupid flying monkies!

AmEng:

Lots of folks have considered this but unless the inch mags get a lot more scarce and/or a lot more expensive, the cost of converting a metric to an inch like you suggest would be too costly to be a money maker.

"Inch" and "Metric" Magazines were suppose to be from the start (1954) be the same and interchangeable. In fact ALL NATO serving rifles were suppose to have interchanging MAGAZINES and AMMUNITION.

To say FN were a 'little peeved' is a huge understatement that Canada developed the front lug and that Britain, Canada and Australia made it standard.
