I want to make a short barrel rifle (SBR), so I'll need to move the gas block down to fit the shorty DSA tactical handguards. The problem is after checking my extra barrels, I find that the barrel diameter is too small in the area where the gas block would be. If I tried to pin it there, I would have lots of gas leakage because its not a tight enough fit.
My question is.. Is there a particular barrel type that I can use that has a bigger diameter? Full contour, medium contour? I tried a G1 and a couple of Imbel barrels but they where to skinny. Thanks, Brett |

I have never done this myself, but you might try to find a heavy barrel. Or use a commerical barrel that has the gas block installed.
Good luck, Vince |

You need to make a sleeve and silver braze it on the barrel, or inside the gas block.
BTW, you need to move it back 3" for the DSA shorty handguards.

I had Moses reduce the barrel O.D. behind the gas block to match the O.D. forward of the gas block. I also had him cut and crown my barrel at 16.25". He did a great job and fast turn around. I then used an Inch flash hide to make a sleeve for the gas block and a retaining band for the sling swivel. The gas block, sleeve, retaining band and muzzle weight where all silver solder together at the same time. I then redrilled the hole for the gas block pin and pined it in place for good measures.
Here as some photos which should help:
