Help me decide Leupold M8 or Nikon Monarch
I am trying to decide on a low magnification scope for my 20" Steyr Prohunter in .376 Steyr, I think it would make a great short range dangerous game rifle. I have narrowed the field to the Leupold M8 2.5x20 and the Nikon Monarch 1x20.
The Leupold is $179 and the Nikon $159, I normally shy away from cheap glass, but with these two scope I don't think quality is an issue, just cheaper because of the single magnification. Any recomendations? |

Leupold if you are looking at a scope. 2.5 is at least magnified the 1 X is an unmagnified red dot. Having said this I have an unmagnified 20mm red dot on my G1 and it is fun, just not as accurate for me as the iron sights. Iron I can shoot MOA or MOA plus a bit, redot puts me at around 4 MOA. Funny thing about that is that my red dot is a 3 MOA dot so I am not getting the groups I believe I should be. I am looking for a reliable and economical 4X for my baby right now. QD rings for all kinds of glass fun.

Leupold, but just from customer loyalty standpoint.
sent them a f@$ked up scope I got at yard sale, asked them about getting it repaired. was returned to me within weeks, calibration and test paperwork, new box, darn near new looking. *no charge* I'll never buy another brand of scope again.

I just got an M8, nice little scope and not very expensive. Don't see the point of a 1X scope unless it is an Aimpoint.

Tony, just an FYI. I traded for a Nikon 4-12 Monarch awhile back from a guy on this board. Scope was in good shape when I got it. I put it on my oldest deer rifle. It has Redfield bases and rings on it. I've had about 5 other scopes on this gun, never a problem.
I went to the range to sight it in and I couldn't hit paper. Got home, took the scope off, and saw that the rings had crushed the main tube badly and obviously that bent the scope. That's why it wouldn't get on paper before running out of adjustment. I put one of my Leupolds that had been on it before back on. No problemo. Only thing I could figure was the main tube is soft. I'm going to send it back, but I'm doubtful that I'll get any joy out of it as it's technically my boo-boo. I used the same amount of torque on it as I do my Leupolds. ![]() It's very hard, heck it's impossible, to go wrong with Leupold.

I've always wondered how Nikon could really test their scopes adequately, considering they are manufactured in a gunless country.
(My cameras are Nikons.) |
