I just recently received my Israeli FAL build from Rich Saunders of Century Gun Works: Rich@CGW
Please excuse the photos, as I was using a rather poor quality camera. First off, I want to say that Rich was great to deal with, and a pleasure to talk to. He kept me informed of the status of my rifle, and listened to my numerous concerns and requests during this build. Personally, I believe that Rich really goes above and beyond to make sure that the customer is satisfied. I have absolutely no complaints about my rifle, except that it actually looks too nice to shoot (but I will). Here's the info on the rifle itself and supplied parts: All new/excellent Israeli heavy barrel kit with open ear gas block (from John Hudgens). Barrel cut down to 18 inches, just behind the bipod coupler notch in the top of the barrel. Barrel also has an 11 degree recessed target crown. Furniture stripped and coated with tung oil. Needs some more coats but looks good for now. Original new Israeli pistol grip. Israeli light barrel carry handle and semi-auto selector. Original Israeli bolt with one-piece extractor exchanged for new two-piece extractor bolt. DSA type-2 receiver (Israeli type-2 lower receiver). DSA Izzy gas tube. All metal Duracoated with the satin HK-type black finish. US parts are the DSA receiver, DSA gas piston, DSA magazine floorplate and a FSE hammer, trigger and sear. Rifle is heavy, but balances nice. Also balances well using the carry handle. The only "used" part on this whole rifle is the buttplate washer from an Imbel kit. I haven't shot the thing yet, but everyone I show it to is amazed. They also can't believe how freakin' heavy it is! Anyway, here's the photos...

Included this photo, but it is really poor. The rifle looks 1000% better than this. I definately need a new camera.

I did just noticed the light barrel carry handle. Does that provide a good balance point w/ the short heavy out front?

good job on the detail.

Cadillac, I was kind of worried about that myself, but the the light barrel carry handle works out great. With the 18 inch heavy-barrel the balance point is exactly where it should be.
Rich, The lettering was fairly easy, except for the "1" on the gas nut. When wiping the paint off, it is easy to just wipe it right out since it's basically a straight line. On the gas nut I used a Q-tip with the swab end cut off at an angle, and applied the paint. Then I just wiped it with a paper towel. It just comes easy for me as I have patience for gun stuff, but not for chores around the house. No thanks for mass lettering gas nuts. Doing my own was enough. I showed the rifle to some guys at work, they loved it. I almost fell out of my chair when I read "Bad Boy! Bad Boy!" That's seating by reservation only. masman, Thanks for the compliment. I'm old fashioned myself, and prefer original and correct FALs. The Izzy HB carbine is seriously the only "mutt" rifle I really like (not including camo'ed rifles). I tried to keep it all original Israeli parts though, except for the bolt since I wanted a two-piece extractor. It's a heavy rifle that has no real purpose, but I wouldn't trade it for anything. Gotta have at least one "look what I got" rifle. Plus if I ever get tired of it, I have another new Izzy barrel and bipod assembly if I want to make it original. That is one beautiful rifle.
Just FYI, Krylon is now marketing a new spray paint that is formulated for plastic. It is called FUSION and it really is pretty good stuff. I tried it out on a RAMLINE gunstock and once cured, it produced a very tough finish.

Nope... not GunKote. I splurged and got *everything* coated inside and out with the semi-gloss Duracoat. The Duracoat came out nice, and compared to some other spray finishes I've seen so far, it looks really good.
Lauer (manufacturers of Duracoat) list the color as Semigloss Black (HK). Last edited by R4 fan; October 05, 2003 at 16:36. |

Hopefully I'll be taking the Izzy out this weekend to try her out!
I just wanted to add that I am a left-handed shooter, and the Israeli semi-auto selector is right under my trigger finger in the "fire" position. Not enough to bother me (unless I have a death-grip on the rifle), but I'll have to see when I actually fire it. The nice thing is that the Israeli semi-auto selector is easily manipulated with the trigger finger of a left-handed shooter. I might have to have some more Izzy's built if they turn out to be left-handed friendly.

R4,
I saw the same carbine heavy barrel you did and I too have been inspired. I am going to build one ugly heavy carbine, just the opposite of yours. Thanks for the pics they have fueled my desire even more. SF-

Silver Fox,
Thanks for the kind words. I saw Mr. Pogo's Izzy HB carbine photos numerous times, and I just knew that I needed one. I just didn't care for the Smith muzzle brake. With the 18 inch barrel, it looks good and a muzzle device could always be added later. As heavy as this front end is, I seriously doubt I'd ever need any type of muzzle attachment. Also, Rich does fantastic work. The rifle with the black semi-gloss finish looks spectacular. My photos above are really terrible. I took over 20 photos and only kept these. I think the photo of the close-up of the front end is the only one that comes close to the actual color of the rifle. Last edited by R4 fan; May 27, 2007 at 20:37. |

That is a nice rifle. I have a gen-youuu-whine Hesse-made Izzy HB carbine with a Hesse brake. It looks a lot like yours only all beat up!
They are a pain to tote around but they can be fired very rapidly. With the brake on mine, muzzle rise is zilch. The HB keeps the gun from heating up as fast, but then it takes longer for it to cool down! They would make great pin guns.

Hey Templar,
Remember discussing the Arsenal Classic, as compared to the quality of the Galils? Well this rifle is in the same class. It is cosmetically perfect, and actually looks too good to shoot! ![]() Using a quality parts kit, I'd rather have one of Rich's builds than a pre-ban. I've been to a lot of gun shows, and I've seen a lot of rifles that don't even come close to mine. This Izzy makes my DSA SA58 look like a CAI (Century Arms International) rifle! Rich does *excellent* work, and is exceptional to deal with.

Thanks R4, that makes me feel really good.
I sent Rich my pre-ban Springfield Armory SAR-48 Para, the one with a 21" barrel, along with a new Argie 21" barrel (closed ear block, chrome lined) that he was going to cut down to 18" and install, along with a refinnish and a folding cocking handle. Can't wait to get it back.....should hopefully be sometime next week. You're rifle may look too good to shoot, but shoot the damn thing. A bigger crime would be not shooting it!

Well, I had to work all day today, but I managed to go shoot my rifle before I headed home. First off, I had the Izzy for a week, and completely dissassembled and degreased it. I then lubed everything including the gas piston/tube with a light coat of Mil-Comm MC-2500 oil. I should have wiped the gas system down before firing, but oh well.
The gravel pit I went to was filled with dirt-bikes, so I went to another small county range mostly used by hunters for sighting in their deer season rifles. The rifle range is approximately 25 yards, and scattered with shot-up targets and such. I loaded up some Radway Green, and shot about 100 rounds off and on, trying to not let the barrel get too hot. I had to set the rifle down on a nylon guncase, and didn't want to melt it. I had ZERO malfunctions (gas setting on 4), and at this range the rifle was deadly on left behind pumpkins, clay pigeons and other junk. The rifle was pleasant to shoot, but heavy. Shooting with the sling wrapped around your arm made the gun more pleasant to shoot offhand. The selector didn't even bother me shooting left-handed. The rifle started not being able to extract the spent brass casing, or the bolt/bolt carrier wouldn't fully lock up for the next shot. I also had some feeding problems with this magazine I was using (other 3 were okay). I'm not exactly sure, as (around 120 rounds by now) I wasn't really paying attention, just having a blast shooting. I turned the gas setting to 3 1/2, and resumed firing. No more problems at all. I shot about 80 more rounds without a hiccup and wish I'd brought more. The Duracoat had some *slight* brass kisses but no damage to the finish. Overall this rifle is great to shoot, even though it's a little heavy. Rich did a great job as this gun runs flawlessly. Especially since the entire gas system was wet and I didn't wipe it down before firing. Hardly any recoil and almost zero muzzle flip. I agree with Buff that this rifle would make a great pin gun. I was blasting off 20 rounds as soon as I could regain sight picture, which was quick. I originally had this rifle built as a novelty/safe queen, but this Izzy will be shot regularly! If you've been thinking about building a heavy barrel carbine, DO IT! ![]() I will definately be having some more FALs built by Rich in the future.

Here's a photo of my rifle (on top) as compared to George Gouger Izzy HB carbine (on bottom), which I got my idea from. Everything is basically the same, except I didn't want a Smith brake on mine, and got a target crown instead. I included this side-by-side comparison pic for those that may want to have one of these built. It took me forever to decide whether I wanted a muzzle brake on my rifle or not, and had no reference photos to help me decide.
