Imbel Muzzle device wire clip

What is the wire clip for in the rear groove on the Imbel flash hider?
I have taken it out of the groove thinking it may help pin the FH on the barrel but I don't see how.

It provides some resistance to rifle launched gernades....keeps them from sliding off.

i believe it probably also helps with gas pressure (like the rings on an ar/m-16 bolt).
