Chrome barrel cleaner

Hey guys, whats the best way to clean copper foul from a chrome lined barrel.Iknow you cant use anything ammonia based like Hoppes. My rifle's had about 4000 fmj's ran through it and I've noticed accuracy has fallen. When I used a borelight I noticed it has a lot of copperfouling. As usual any imput is greatly appreciated. On FALs I use Remington's bore cleaner. It is a grayish looking paste/liquid that cuts thru the fouling pretty quickly. On bolt guns that are really bad I use Outers Foul-Out. It's a kind of reverse electro plate system that removes copper/lead fouling without scrubbing by hand. It can be used on FALs, but you'd have to block off the gas system so the chemical solution couldn't leak out. Just depends on how bad the fouling is.

Just use the Hoppe's.

...With any chrome lined barrel, you should avoid leaving ammonia based solvents and bore cleaners or pastes in long term contact (i.e. over-night soakings) with the chrome lining as the ammonia can react with the chrome lining and cause oxidation. Quick cleanings with any of these products will not do any damage to your Bushmaster barrel. --Bushmaster website

If it's real bad , try hard chrome polish on a patch.

I have become a big fan of breakfree bore cleaner it works good for me(and anyone that has read my posts knows I'm tough on guns) but you could use Hoppes. Just make sure you get it all out. Just clean good with it then dry it all out with a patch. When your done with that put a tad of oil on the patch then run it thru the bore till it drys out. I used to do that with my dads SIG and Colts ect. That is till i found out how great Breakfree bore cleaner is the nature oils in it make it just the ticket for a abused military rifle bore

The absolute best copper getter outer is Sweet's 762. You can use it on the chrome bore as long as you don't let it set too lonb in the bore. I have had great luck with this stuff. It is VERY strong with ammonia so if the wife objects to the smell, then is is to the garage! Soak a patch and start scrubing. You will see the patch come out green or blue which means the solvent is working to cut the copper.

Great stuff. Most bench rest shooter use this so it can bee too bad!

The same ammonia cautions apply to any barrel, not just chrome. So use whatever works, the chrome won't mind.

My dog chewed the lid off of my Sweets 7.62 bottle and I think it's losing some potency. Excellent copper fouling remover, but doesn't cut the black powder fouling worth a crap. That's where Hoppes really shines. But don't mix them, swab bore dry when changing back and forth.

its suppose to eat away at chrome and its suppose to pitt/rust it. If you want a good one to use for storage get some pro gold lube/grease its a thick golden grease. When i was out of the country for over a year I coated my DSAs with it the bore and outside I then wrapped them in shrink wrap.

Lots of stuff works well.

My fav is a 50/50 mix of Shooters Choice and Kroll. Allways follow with oil.

Wipe-out is really good stuff. Kinda pricey(about14 bucks a can). I use it on the fifty. The7.62 is very good also, but the wipe can be left in the barrel overnight and reall eats copper. It goes in like shaving cream, expanding and covering the inside of the barrel completely. I can't believe how much blue comes out of the barrel when you think its clean and then use this stuff. Haven't tried their other products but they look promising too.

If anything the web page is a good read about fouling.

I don't believe it'll touch the hard chrome inside barrel.
I left on long enough, it will leach the copper from under the nickel on plated guns.
Don't leave it in any bore. Almost any oil is better. Use something synthetic that won't break down.

Wrap a .30 caliber bore brush with 0000 steel wool,.. coat it with Flitz metal polish,.. work it up and down the bore real good,.. finish up by pushing some clean, dry, terrycloth patches through it,... makes it shine like a new dime.
