home park brew

I found a couple references for a home brew that seems to work pretty good. I used 2 tblsp of MnO2 from a D cell battery, 2 tblsp of 85% H3PO4 and, a biscut of Homer Formbies fine steel wool (its what I had in the shop) per gallon of tap water. I was impressed with the first attempt and wanted to try again so I cleaned off the chisel (the park didn't want to come off, took alot longer than the factory finish), added 1 tblsp each of MnO2 and H3PO4 cooked again for 25 min. Here is a shot of the end result. You may not be able to see it sparkle in the sunlight ( I didn't know I'd get that result).

Where'd you get 85% H3PO4? What percentage is the "phos-pho-ric" metal cleaner they sell at Home Despot?

ps. I plan on trying both Manganese and Zinc "real soon now" as soon as I get a recipe figured out. I've got my MnO2 and ZnO in-hand.

I got the 85% phosphoric from our lab. I've been watching it for the last 2 months waiting for it to reach its expiratioin date. Unfortunately we won't be purchasing any more. Go to parkerizingtanks.com, they mention (bossman IIRC) using Home Depot "ospho" and he gives a dilution like 3:1.

Here's more info on this park project. Looking at some other references it seems everybody else is using 3-4 ounces of MnO2 and H3PO4 per gallon (2 tblsp per ounce) and still 1 steel wool biscut. I ran it at this strength for 20 min (as most recommend) and thats also when you see most of the bubbling decrease.

I'm getting tired of tearing apart D cells so I ordered 5 lbs of MnO4 for $1.25 per lbs and $5 shipping.

woohoo - I'm parkin fool!

Is that FH done with MnO2? It's not as dark as I figured it would be.

Have you tried it without adding any steel wool at all?

The FH was done with the second recipe I listed above. It has darkened up a little with oil applied. The way I read and understand it you need all three components for the reaction/oxide layer to form. You will probably get a better answer from guys like '06 here and bossman at parkerizingtanks.com.
