I am bluing a side by side shotgun barrel. There was a paint like substance that covered the center rib and brazed areas. It came off with the bluing removal process. I have asked around and no one knows what it is. Is this stuff just model paint or something special and would it be applied before or after the bluing? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Be careful when bluing a side by side shotgun bbl. You cannot
use the normal hot blue process or the barrels may and probably will separate when the solder melts. Have to use a rust blue or other low temp process. Sorry can't help with the original question, no clue what the coating is.

Could be from black lacqer stick...or something similar. And whether or not the barrels are likely to separate largely depends on who made it...and when.

I have seen this on Savage/Stevens 311/511/ etc., series of shotguns many times. They are silver soldered(can be caustic blued) and the black stuff is just paint- to color the gold looking solder.
