Barrel Hot Enought to Melt Duct Tape After 2 Mags
I went out for the first time today since the Mason-Dixon Frozen Nuts Shoot back in January. After two mags I set the CAI Sporter down on the sandbags which happened to wrapped a few times in duct tape, I guess to get a little more life out of the bags. As soon as the barrel touched the tape I saw a few wisps of smoke come up and heard a little sizzle. Fortunately I didn't melt it all the way through and make a big mess my first time at a new range. So my question is should my barrel be getting this hot after two mags? I was using Port surplus. I couldn't really tell if it was getting over heated like this in January, I think it was only in the upper teens that weekend.
If any of the Mason-Dixon folks who looked at my uni-brow feed ramp are reading this I didn't have any failure to feeds today and only had failure to ejects when I started playing with the gas setting. Once I got it adjusted I put 60 more rounds through it with no failures. I would have shot more but I wanted to play with my new 10/22, plus as I said the FAL was heating up really fasst today. The range I went to today is in Westminister, Maryland, the Hap Baker Firearms Facility. The place kicks royal ass, even though they only ten have stations. I was so impressed I became a member 10 minutes after I arrived.

Two mags will make my STG or G-1 that hot, if I rip the rounds off rapid aimed fire. Doesn't sound abnormal to me.
The first time I tried out my 75 round drum in the SAR-1, I ripped of all 75, laid the weapon down on the shooting bench, and promptly melted a barrel-shaped hole in my plastic binocular case. Straight through to the bottom. Had a heck of a time getting the melted plastic off the barrel, too.

I wasn't doing any rapid fire, it's not allowed at this range. That's what worried me a bit, that the barrel got that hot after 40 rounds.

This does not sound out of the ordinary to me.
It makes the same sound when the barrel touches sweaty flesh. The neck is a good candidate when slinging the rifle. AMHIK. I carry an old towel to wrap the barrel if I have to stuff the rifle in a carry case made of synthetic material while the rifle is still hot.

The dean of WECSOG hath spoken
, I feel better. I'll make sure to keep my barrel away from soft fleshy surfaces after firing.

Hi Turbinator:
Yeah, it was cold....I used "Shorty's" bbl to keep my fingers warmed up! ![]() I think we've ALL done it, in one way or another. One slow-fire mag of RG was enough to melt a big bbl shaped hole in a new blue poly tarp. Took a year to get all THAT off! Guess that's why most sand bags are made of leather..takes a LOT of heat to burn thru them!![]() Glad to hear it's all working right, now. Best, Paul
