The thing that surprises me most is not that it keeps firing, but that at 12k rounds, its only about as dirty as my FAL with about 2-3k through it. About 800 of that was that dirty OFV stuff that was awesomely cheap. I've got that fungus (carbon buildup) on my handguard though not as thick, but my interenals and reciever look very much the same. Maybe I should give mine a bath
![]() Great Project James. I love taking equipment to the extreme to really see what they will hold up to. I've got an AK that since I purchased it I havn't cleaned it. As of a recent trip i've got about 5-6k through it. It's a standard SAR, I wanna see if the barrel will wear out before it jams. MY guess is yes, even with the mud and dirt that gets packed in. -myers

FAL GRUNT--It can only get so dirty and then it cleans it self, if you know what I mean. Sometimes it looks dirtier than other times. As I lube and shoot it crap falls off and then get added back on.
If you have a chrome bore on your AK I don't think you have to worry about shooting the bore out on it. Don't know what your's looks like but here are a few pictures from various times. James

Previous picture was taken about 18 months before this one.
Not sure if the round count is right on this picture but the date is. I think there is more at that date in time.

James
Have you done any comparisons as to the accuracy of the rifle in its present state, against when it was somewhat cleaner? I assume that umpteen thousand rounds will have had some effect on the bore but wonder if the lack of cleaning has made an appreciable difference to how well it groups. |

I've seen several .22's this dirty, but never a real rifle. I just couldn't do that to something I liked. There must be something wrong with the FAL we've got. At the SW VA Appleseed my son would have to close the gas adjustment knob a turn or two about every 35 or 40 rnds. during the afternoon even though it was cleaned each morning. We got a new gas piston and tube for it but haven't put it on yet. Glad to hear the reputation is better than we've experienced. I have some hope again now and we might keep it.

7.62s, maybe you should find a fal smith there who can open up your gas port hole a touch. That's what it took to get hubby's fal running (thanks Sledgehammer!!).

and I thought that the AK was the ultimate reliable rifle. This is an incredible story. However, I would not recommend that any rife not be cleaned. Carbon is a very hard substance. Not cleaning a rife will result in greatly accelerated wear and a marked decrease in accuracy. Once the barrel throat is eroded gas blowby and any accuracy goes right out the window. The gun then becomes somewhat dangerous to shoot. I keep my rifes spotless and oiled so they are clean preserved and ready for any emergency!

clean Ol' Dirty ? SACRELEGE !
Dlagrua;
Sure, we all know that one should clean his weapon. But that's the entire point (I think) to James' excersise. If you've read the entire thread, the gas piston spring is BROKEN , and has been for several hundred~a few thousand (?) rounds. but Ol' Dirty still runs. From my perspective, James and Ol' Dirty has set, and CONTINUES to set, the "Benchmark of Reliability". One always hears about the "Legendary Reliability of the AK" I challenge any "Disciple of the AK" to simply match Ol' Dirty ,and the same for the "Desciple any platform" on the "reliablity issue" simply match Ol' Dirty ? Am I going to treat my FAL the same as James treats Ol' Dirty ? Not just "no",, but HELL NO!! After a shooting session, I bring her home, meticulously clean her, carefully lubricate her, give her a Kiss, and gently tuck my Princess into her softly padded case Here's a SALUTE to James and Ol' Dirty Mike |

How many clicks is the gas setting on, and have you had to adjust it along the way?

Here are some answers to a few questions.
Falcon, without going out and looking I'm not sure where it is set. I haven't touched in 5 or 6 years. I don't think my gas nut is number either so I don't really remember where it's set. I'll try to remember and take a picture of it and post it when I can. BiGB808, I have 20 t0 25 mags I load up and use them all the time. No cleaning on them either. English Mike, best info I could find is that back in Nov 2003 Tex shot a 2" group at 100 yds with Dirty. Round count was 5400. It's over twice that now so I guess I should see what it will do soon. James

Posted by John Hardin,
...I wonder if a L1A1 sand-cut bolt carrier would have affected whether or not it reliably cycles without lubrication? I think what happens when it is not lubed is that all that crap on the rails and bolt carrier gets kind of sticky and it takes a lot more power to cycle the bolt. Once I put some oil on it everything works OK. James

Don't think anyone at Arf.com tried this, but thousands of soldiers have tried to make the AR run when it's dirty.
It won't when it's this dirty.

james,
Thanks for taking the time to post the photo's, and more importantly proving the FAL's gas operated, tilting bolt design is truly steadfast.

James,
How about a picture of the gas piston and gas tube... if you can get it out. How much junk has worked its way into the space in the lower around the hammer, etc.?

I'd be willing to bet the round count now is going to increase at a much slower rate since Port has achieved the rare military cartridges of the world status.

is it me or does the shirt appear to have a 30 round mag in Old Dirty?
I am sure that the only rifle that CAN come close to Old Dirty would be an AK...I have shown several people up here at work and they are amazed at the capabilities of these rifles... I do have a question...how dirty do you get James when you shoot her? lol D

Ah Yes. The rifle of legend. Geeze talk about an incredible example of what good engineering can do. Don't ever clean that rifle. If you do it would probably fall apart. I had a bicycle as a kid that I never did anything to for years. I finally broke down and did a good cleanup, oil and grease everything. After that it started having problems. I broke the MoJo that was keeping it going. I'd like to know how much the ammo bill is so far for the rifle. And considering the cost of ammo increase how long can he continue feeding it?

I have never bothered to read this post before. This is a amazing tribute to the FAL! James is setting a record that I doubt that if ever broken, will fail to be documented.
I have become a regular reader and will be looking forward to updates!
