Dirty is thinking about coming to New Mexico in April. Our last get together in Texas turned out to be a great time and I think this one may also. Would hate to miss a good get together with other FAL'ers.

Right on, Cacheton, we'd love to meet you and yer dirty companion.

We met Worldskipper for lunch last month and he had nothing but praise for you and your Dirtyship, the Duchess of Dirt.

A Royal Rifle, indeed.

Thumbs up

Well done, James. This is an extemely fascinating undertaking which is providing very valuable real world experience/info that fellow FAL'ers need to know.

I'm real curious as to the wear on the camming surfaces of the bolt carrier. Have you kept the bolt/bolt carrier camming surfaces lubed, or have you only been lubing the carrier and rails and not bothering with lubing the inside of the bolt carrier at the camming surfaces? I would be concerned about the peening out of the camming surfaces in the bolt carrier and the subsequent potential for firing out of battery. How about a photo of the camming surface of the bolt carrier where it cams down the top of the bolt?

TIA!

That wasn't a Brit smashing that StG, it was an Austrian. (Some of us at the time thought it might be Art Garfunkel's brother or something.)

This was part of a protest against these rifles being de-milled and sold (to US) as parts kits.

Lube on all the wear surfaces. 10,880 rds so far. Last 5-600 rounds there has been about 5 jams where the case did not extract all the way and was caught by the bolt closing. Also one where the case was stuck in the chamber and it ripped the rim off. Never had the problem of the case sticking and only when it was dry did the case not make it out. I've been trying not to do anything to it but if this keeps up I'll have to start looking for the cause.

Here's a picture of the bolt and carrier.

Hey Sledge, I am not saying you need to clean the Ol' dirty for any reason other than checking out the Barrel for excessive build up that might cause a over pressure in the throat during shooting, resulting in a kaboom.

Maybe just check out the barrel for safety reasons.

This article made me think of the fouled barrel issue >> http://www.thegunzone.com/m1akb/762r.html Yeah, I know its a M14 and not a Fal.

Anyway, I do like that Ol'Dirty, makes me proud of my Fals and not want to clean them.....ever

Not sure why this article induces thoughts of fouled barrels. Metallurgical analysis of the barrel indicated improper manufacturing processes/poor quality control were the culprit. I quote: "In summary, the failure of the M-14 barrel was the result of a poorly formed microstructure in the steel." Carry on, Ol' Dirty.

Israeli switch

I would bet the REAL reason Israel switched was a little palm-greasing between the gov't and the contractors... (IMI?) What says we are the only country with that kind of thing going on? The 'reliability issue' sounds like a 'good' excuse. Something probably happened ONE time, and some bigwig probably said, "we cannot continue to let our fighting men and women defend our great country armed with such a weapon...you know, I know of this one rifle that might fit our needs, it has two or three less moving parts."

I am in the process of buying my first FAL. Now I know why that little voice was saying, "just buy one..."

I got to see Ol' Dirty in action at the FAL Fest. I've got some good pictures that I'll post once I get em all organized. It ran like a champ, but we'll need an updated round count. Lot's of rounds went downrange this weekend.

P.S. It was real nice talking with ya, James.

Vic303,

I'm in the Dallas area. I'm sure at some point in the future we'll meet up and shoot some together. Back in November I organized a shoot for the board members here and had about 75 or so people show up for some shooting and camping for two day. We all had a greet time.

Looking at your name does that mean you are into Enfields?

Review the meeting section from time to time to see if anything is planned for this area.

For the sake of your own life, properly clean Old Dirty; you don't need in the ER with an eye surgeon after a KB.

You've proved your point, now properly clean and maintain your FAL; you don't need your go to rifle not to work after the big tornado ends civilization.

BTW, is it a century?

Based on how 'Ol Dirty was runnin' at FAL Fest you might ruin her for life with a good cleaning. Maybe just a touch of perfume behind each rear sight screw?

IMHO, I don't see any eye-related fears are neccessary with 'Ol Dirty. It seems to get its barrel punched and the action oiled from time to time. It's not going to blow up...it just might....someday...fail to fire or eject... someday... This "project" is a testement to the reliability and longitivity of the FAL. It's not the same as "pulling a Roethlisberger."

July 8, 2006, update: Ole dirty is old ugly and dirty. James was shooting it as usual without a failure. It was accurate at 400 yds.

The rifle appears to be knocking the crud off and not accumulating more.

Another report after 5,000 or so more rds. without cleaning, I suppose.

Self cleaning, I like it. When the build up gets too built up, a moving part just knocks a chunk off and it keeps going.

Self cleaning

A young fellow camper on a summer-long adventure from Colorado to Alaska decided to wear his only pair of pants--white Levis--all summer. We noticed both the filth and the smell early in week three.

He posited: "Look, you will all agree they can only get so dirty, right?"

The other eight of us agreed, emphatically saying he and they had reached the point of dirt saturation.

His response? "So, since they can't get any dirtier, I expect they will start cleaning themselves!"

Whereupon we tackled him in the laundromat, undid his pants, and made him stand in his underwear until those pants were washed and dried--still looking dirty, but at least not smelling.

Interesting test, James, but watch out for those self-righteous gun cleaning nuts!

No I don't do anything to it. The gas piston spring has been broken for a long time now. If the bolt is held back and I point the gun up the piston drops down into chamber loading area, or whatever you call that above the mag.

If I remember correctly I had several thousand round through it and it needed cleaning so I thought, how many rounds will this go before it stops running? I didn't clean it much before I started this as I usually went 1000 to 2000 rounds before I cleaned it. When I first got it I shot it two or three times a week anywhere between 50 and 200 rounds each time. Shooting that much meant that would be a lot of cleaning and I wasn't going to do that. I have about 13,000 rounds through it since it was last cleaned but I probably have about 18,000 through it since I purchased it.

OOPS,

Sorry 'bout that, I read that a long time ago and a momentary brain f^&t kept me from re-reading it.

Stg Kit=$400
Imbel Rcvr=$400
7 Parts=$100
Labor=$300

so now, it would cost $1200~$1300 to replace that gun...
PLUS 20k rounds of surplus at $200/k, call that $4,000

all in all an expensive experiment at $5k+ to duplicate..

Yeah, but some folks blow that much money easy on one lousy week of family vacation at the beach. One of those ordeals you only hope you can forget.

The saga of Ol' Dirty is one of those things we hope we never forget.

If it counts as entertainment, I'd say it has been a heckuva bargain.
