once again, something different, WILSON COMBAT...
been scouting around for one of the older Wilsons for a while, this one has all tool steel small parts (slide stop, hammer/sear, firing pin stop etc.). Has an extremely crisp 3+/- lb. trigger, ambi safety, all Black Armor Tuff finish etc. Its the Protector model which i think has been discontinued, basically a CQB with a full length guide rod.
Was built in 98 and just purchased second hand but new at about 1/2 price of a current Wilson. Any how, here is a pic- |

It was an extremely good deal, wont say how good but only 3 digits
Fit is good overall, frame slide is as tight as i would want a carry pistol, barrel fit is good but not extremely "hard" fit like on the customs ive owned from Vickers, Jardine, Stagg etc... But good none the less. Wilson trigger jobs are second to none, even the big name Pistolsmiths. This trigger was set from Wilson at 3.5 lbs, but feels much lighter and breaks like the ever ellusive 'glass rod'. Machining overall is good to very good, with front strap checkering being perfectly machine checkered at 30 lpi (ONLY Pete Single does an equal or arguably better job). Beavertail fit is average/good, they simply use a jig and dont do much blending afterward. I prefer the near "seamless" jobs of folks like Chuck Rogers, Richard Heinie etc. For the price the pistol cant be beat. Would i pay the current $1500+ for a compatable Wilson??? I dont know. There are many good pistolsmiths out there that can build EXACTLY what i want, how i want. Its hard to pass those guys up for a cookie cutter custom, but it just depends on what your desires are. Sear, i would get a current Wilson price list, i bet some one misquouted you, sounds high. Most folks get from 225 to 275 for a barrel/bushing fit and supplied by the maker. The beauty in the semi customs, especially the Wilsons is that if you can buy them right the resale is always good and always creeping up. There are better pistols out there, but you will generally have to spend a great deal more money, especially than what i paid for this one. Heres the other side, i will try and get some better pics as these are real dark and dont show details on the checkering etc. |

Wilson builds great pistols. Ed Brown would also be a great choice in the simi custom market. This one is a Black over Gray CQB. I have about 2,000 rounds through it and except for the first day out for break-in, it has been 100%. Even used, the Wilson's retain the lifetime warranty and their service is excellent.

Very nice piece of work. I would buy any older Wilson with total confidence. I would probably look elsewhere for a new piece. His parts are awesome and his pistolas still have all the inherent accuaracy they have always had but aren't being tuned to their full potential....according to one of his smiths. The high volume bug has hit Wilson's which means less time for the little details.
just my 2 cents. |

Those Wilsons are great pistols, but is there anyone else out there like me who really hates the new trend of putting serrations up near the muzzle?
Kimber, Springfield Armory, and Wilson all are doing this now. Breaks up the outline of a beautiful pistol, is hard on holsters, and I have never felt the need to use them.

yeah i dont like "press check" serrations either, and judging by what i see most folks that are having customs built, they are on the way out. But would i pass a great deal becuase of it, nope.

The serrations are very handy if you like to press check the pistol without putting your fingers in front of the muzzle. This is especially true on a smooth sided pistol with tight lockup. I had the cuts done on an old style stainless SA for that reason.
At one time people were also getting the front ends serrated because it made them different, but now that everyone has 'em..... .......There's bound to be a Yogi Barra comment in here somewhere.
