Needing advise on a barrel.

I am getting ready to purchase a Barnett barrel for my M1 chambered for 308. My question is whether to get the 4 groove or the 6 groove rifling. I know it's not an FAL but you guys are smarter than most. I feel sure some of you have run into the same situation or heard of others who have. Thanks in advance for your help.

what the hell, go with six. more is better right? just kidding. in my opinion 6 is better. you might lose on the velocity but it should stablize the bullit better.

The twist rate will be a greater factor in the accuracy than the number of lands and grooves. In general, a 1:10 twist rate will provide better results with the bullets in the 147 grain to 180 grain weight range ( in 308win).

1:10 twist rate means that for every 10 inches of forward travel, the bullet will make 1 revolution.

Re: Needing advise on a barrel.

Split the difference and go with 5 grooves. Well, make it 5 and 1/2 grooves. No, wait, 4 and 2/3!

If you're going to use the heavier (and longer) bullets, of 173 grain and higher, go with 4 groove / 10 twist.

Krieger uses 4 grooves for their M1A & Garand barrels, and they have a strong reputation.

Dan Lilja has used a 3 groove barrel in competition, and others have as well, with good results, and Lilja now sells them. This is a special 3 groove, with extra wide lands - like a 6 groove but omitting every other groove. Lilja wanted more land surface at the throat to resist gas erosion, but it turned out the barrel shot well, too.

A barrel with fewer grooves is easier to clean because of less surface area to foul. For soft lead bullets you might want more grooves for more grip, but 4 should be plenty for regular jacketed ammo.

4 groove, yea.
