Need a good source for chrome plating

Has anyone had any custom chrome plating done on firearms?? I have a pistol that needs blasting/polishing/ and chrome plating. I need some sources to get it done.

I have found several doing searches, however I need some input from someone with real life experience.

Do I worry about the fit of close tolerance parts after the plating? Is Hydrogen embrittlement something to be concerned about?

Any advice would help!!

I had a pistol (.44spl Bulldog) magna-ported and Black Chromed
at "Marker Machine Company, Charleston, Illinois. Can't recommend the magna-porting But I love the Black Chrome. It looks.....just like it sounds

Go to "The Cult of the P7" board at www.parkcitiestactical.com and look for info there on hard chroming. Since P7's wear so quickly, those guys are experts. The two places that are reccomended the most on that board are "Trips" and "Fords". You'll find more info on each, along with contact info, in the archives there.

I have a CZ-75 that the previous owner had hardchromed and customized by Accurate Weaponry and Plating in Florida. The gun looks fine, and the chrome seems to be durable enough. Since I didn't have the work done myself though, I can't comment about the customer service or the cost. I don't have contact info for them handy either.

Hope this helps

My understanding is that the hard chrome is only about .0002 thick, hard as nails and has very good lubricity.

Do you want someone to just do the plating for you, or do you want someone to make sure it works right after being plated? If the latter, I highly recommend:

Rick McDowell
Competition Specialties
827 Townline Rd., PO Box 451
Osceola, Iowa 50213
641-342-2011
800-369-4481

He'll send it out for plating, then reassemble and test it afterwards. If it doesn't work right, he corrects it.

He also knows more about diagnosing/repairing AR gas system problems than anyone else I've run across.

Here is a pretty interesting link concerning plating. Basically, it started out reading like a new TRS (which are very tight) with problems. Then it turned out to be a slightly used gun that the first owner had had plated. In this thread is also a link with more opinions on some of the companies that do the plating.
