How stupid can they get?

19 year old nephew lost his keys at work. He empties his pockets, keys, wallet and all everyday at the trampoline place so they won't fall out of his pockets. Only wears gym shorts. Just lays them on a table. He claims somebody took them. Calls his mom who is lost on what to do. No spare key. Car isn't locked. Dealership can't get a key today. They are worried his custom wheels will get stolen. Towing the car is too expensive. Won't call locksmith.
This is everyday life for them. Phones have been replaced many times cause the fall out of his shorts all the time. He parks in clearly marked tow zones.
I am dumfounded how two intelligent people can fail so badly at teaching any form of common sense to their children.
Sorry about bad typing.
This is the only place I can rant!

Took these today. I figured at least I'd have a couple photos if anyone needed to identify the charred remains. While it has been debunked that cell phones won't cause a fire while filling up, I personally don't do it and keep my distance if I see someone using their phone while pumping gas.

...especially through a funnel.

I'm assuming he calls mom because she'll make it hurt less. I'm all for helping our kids, but sometimes that helping looks like letting them learn a mildly painful lesson so they avoid a really painful one later. Most of us learn when our stupid hurts bad enough.

I once told the mother that lessons cost, big lessons cost a lot. That upset her. She keeps paying for those lessons and never passes them on to her children.
After almost losing their house the third time they asked us to cosign a loan. After talking to their bank we found out it would really be a loan to me and the wife. I got away from that so fast it would make your head spin.
I keep asking, how could it be so hard to learn from their mistakes?

Stop asking and accept what is. Maybe someday they figure it out and then you'll be able to help...

I understand in life that bad things happen to good people where it was outside of their control. But if it's something stupid they did than oh well, they need to take in all the consequences for it.

NEVER LOAN money to friends or family you can NOT afford to lose. A wise old fellow told me this many moons ago. And boy was his advice sage.... I never got burned but watched some in my family fugg each other over more than once , even after I warned it was bad ju ju to proceed.

There have to be consequences to the dumb actions people take. If Mom/Dad keep bailing out their kids, the kids will always think that someone will save the day.

You have to let them fail so that forces them to learn to bail out themselves. I know parents/family members feel bad but just how long can you help them??
I personally have given up on some people, you can lead a horse to water........

I believe it's called "tough love"

Don't worry, I don't give them money. We live 2 hours away. I would help one of the kids if they really needed something except cash. The parents can pound sand.
After watching the drama for 20 years I'm still impressed with the lack of sense.

Respectfully, stop bitching & start teaching.

Help out whomever, but inform them in the process how much they're failing/falling short/etc.

Pull thier card, for their own good.

Don't feed Snowflakes, teach them.

Don't be an a**hole (too much), but don't coddle them either.

But, most of all, don't be silent. If his/her parents are failing them (and by your own admission, they clearly are) step up to the plate and correct it.

Wishing isn't going to accomplish anything.

If "this is the only place you can rant" - you have the wrong mind set. Don't rant, TEACH.

As another noted, tough love. If you don't step up now, you think anyone else will? Clearly you already know the answer.

Im not trying to come across abrasive, but you clearly have an opportunity to FIX, rather then bitch about things. I hope you seize the opportunity.

PBR, it almost sounds like ADD (Attention Deficit Disorder) at work, and running in high gear. That's at least what my wife would call it, as it runs in her family, and they act the same way.

After over a decade of marriage I finally got her to the point of not having them use her, they are finally putting more effort into thinking things through.

Realizing pretty quick what was going on, I cut them off on any material support (money, co-signing, taking them to eat, taking them to places), and I was adamant about it.

They learned pretty quick that I meant what I said and that I followed through.

Nowadays, we are on lots better terms, and they have learned, for most part.

In addition to my previous post, it seems that a lot of people suffer from a learning disorder.

They just don't want to learn, because it is too much effort for them, and it makes their CPU hurt. Some also think that they know it all, and nobody can teach them. This, combined with entitlement issues, creates a mixture for - FAILURE.

Guess you didn't see where I said they live 2 hours from me.

WTF does "pull their card" mean?

I do not tell my SIL what to do. You are welcome to start shit with your family but I know better.

I already am an asshole but l leave coddling to the wimps already doing it.

I do not need a stranger telling me how to deal with in-laws. Go start shit with your in-laws and let me know how it improved your life or anyone else's.

I posted to rant about the stupid shit I see. My wife doesn't want to hear it and neither does anyone else in the family. I thought maybe someone here could relate.

I really don't need or want your advice.

Who are you to tell me how to handle a family situation?

It seems to me that his mom wants to shelter him from life, and that's what he does not need. He needs to learn how to get his act together and keep it together.

I sometimes get irritated when moms call their adult kids "babies", IMO that is totally off and a misrepresentation of facts. I would not do that to a 10-year-old.

Moonbat60: I know exactly where you're coming from. All financial help stopped long ago. They keep doing the same thing hoping for different outcomes. Their state of mind is always FRANTIC.

Moonbat60:Helicopter parents. Absolutely. Every time he lost a toy they would rush to the store and replace it. He would through fits playing baseball and they would coddle him.
I learned to keep out of it quickly so my wife would stay with me.

PBR, sounds like you've got it about as well as it can be gotten. Too bad for the kid, but on the upside the kid actually HAS a job...

Let them be FRANTIC, as long as they want to be or need to be.

I'd rather help out some of my few good friends, and that's it.

Also, as the old saying goes, no problem can ever be solved in the same frame that it was created in.

I am frustrated. I don't drink cranberry juice and don't believe in safe spaces. If you would like to share similar feelings with me then I will be happy to hear them. I learned long ago to not tell people how to run their lives. Nobody wants to hear it.

A number of people that I ran into around here would not be able to tell the difference, even if their life would depend on it, or if they would earn $1 million per hour.

I guess that some explanation is in order: I came from a family of soldiers, LEO's and engineers. On the male side, all of my grandparents, uncles and such, had served in the armed forces, mostly army, and a few air force.

I'm picking up what youre putting down. My kids know they are MY babies, and always will be. But they also know they aren't babies, and just because they're MY baby doesn't mean they'll be treated like one by me or anyone else(19, 17, and 14).

PBR, they are thinking short-term, and short-term means just for the next minute or two.

They can't help it. They are structured that way. They lead an eventful life with lots more downs than ups, and they can't figure out why. Most of it just starts between their ears, and as I tell some folks, it is just a 1 kilobyte fluff drive, with most of the apps not loading correctly.

Can you kinda elaborate on this? He builds trampolines? Or plays on trampolines every day?

I take it means he works in a trampoline park

Quit the tire place making $12.00 for the trampoline park and minimum wage.

Well if it makes you feel any better, the majority of people live hand to mouth because they don't face reality and the consequences of bad decisions. I've done stupid shit but tried to learn from the mistakes. I spent several years single and had nobody to call if something happened. Got married again about 3 1/2 years ago to a nice, hard working but very ditzy woman when it comes to day to day things. Here are a few examples:

Your car registration expires this month. Why haven't you sent in for the new one?

When are you going to deal with the $750 that you owe for letting 3 tolls amounting to $7 fester into collection before we were married. Her response "well those weren't me". Ignoring shit makes it go away...Not.

She gets a ticket for speeding, again. Why aren't you using cruise control? "what's that". She was all upset that her insurance went up to $400 right after we were married. I managed to get it back down by putting her on mine.

The latest was last week coming to a hotel room from me hanging out with the guys having a few beers and her being the DD. Pulls in the parking lot and drives right over a curb doing about 15MPH. WTF

I've just accepted that I need to watch over her when it comes to the everyday stuff. But man do I get tired of having to deal with it on an ongoing basis. It is stressful at times.

I heard the fireworks again and I knew who was setting off the big ones last night. Tom sets them off not in celebration but to remember his dead son, it's something they enjoyed together.

His boy was a teenager shooting hoops at the grade school when his friends mom stopped in her van and said it was time to come home for dinner. Not far to home and Toms boy jumped on the back of the van grabbing the ladder and the mom didn't see him. Went just a little ways and the kid fell backwards hitting his head on the pavement killing him.

One unthinking moment and it killed a great kid. So how do you get people to think, to not be stupid? I really don't know if you can.

I feel for you guys. My wife has also got “car trouble”. She cannot guess where her car begins and ends. The other day she bumped into my truck in the driveway, even though we have got a two car garage and a two car wide driveway.

This is not counting the times when she almost hit her rearview mirrors while entering or exiting the garage with her car.

She is also of that kind of folks that put electricians tape over the service engine light on the dash, instead of getting to the bottom of things.

I wonder if he's trying to put diesel into a gasser and is using the funnel to do so?

Well, busting tires is tough work, especially truck tires, so I could see perhaps wanting to do something less difficult for a little less money. This way he gets to look at chicks being jiggly.

With these new push-button start vehicles, you're stuck with an expensive electronic key, so you only get two. I hate mine and would rather have an old-style ignition key, as they're a pain in the ass from my perspective, with no added benefit except being able to press a big red button on the dash.

yeah, those key/remote/fobs are getting close to a grand each, you will soon need a loan for 2 extra car keys

If it's any consolation, people, in the main, have always possessed little in the way of intelligence. Common sense has never been common.

This is everyday life for them. Phones have been replaced many times cause the fall out of his shorts all the time. He parks in clearly marked tow zones.
I am dumfounded how two intelligent people can fail so badly at teaching any form of common sense to their children.
Sorry about bad typing.

I hear you loud and clear. My problem is that my wife is intelligent, but she just won't listen. I can't tell her how to do something because I come off as being preachy or an asshole. So I hint/suggest/recommend and then she does it the way she wants anyway and rants about the outcome. It's often one of those "you wouldn't have burned yourself if you'd listened; I told you that thing was hot" moments.

Oh well... what's a fellow to do? I love her to death and she puts up with me. I'm sure she's just as annoyed with my short memory and selective hearing...

They towed the car home. $100.00. New key $100.00. Still no spare key. Ignoring the lessons is for dumb people.

Ya got that right Lew. Every day I'm out working driving my truck I'm reminded of this constantly and I always ask myself who dresses these people and gets them out on the road to harass me ( and try to kill me & others ) while I'm trying to earn a living out here.

Thinking like that fuels the vicious circle of poverty.

I am convinced it's Darwinian. We are actively breeding common sense out of the species. Just look at the Dumbokrats, snowflakes, BLM, etcetera, etcetera ad nauseum.
