Literally kidnapped...

...for virtual money?
Isn't bitcoin trackable? I mean, each coin must have some means of digital identification,or else anybody could just clone a bazillion by themselves.

https://www.zerohedge.com/news/2017-...leaving-office

"Being a "Bitcoin Billionaire" just got a bit more complicated after reports surfaced that the CEO of EXMO, a UK-based Bitcoin exchange, was kidnapped in Kiev. According to The Telegraph, Pavel Lerner (40) was pulled into a black Mercedes Benz by a group of armed men wearing ski masks as he left his office in the Obolon district of Kiev on December 26.

Adding to the intrigue of the abduction, EXMO's website suffered a DDOS attack this morning, which knocked trading temporarily offline, just as news of the kidnapping begin to draw public attention"

I don't know if this was brilliant or the stupidest crime ever.

Of course, the same thing could be said for Federal Reserve Notes.

Anything could have happened and any group could be responsible.

If the kidnapping was real, it could have been the Chinese, the Federal Reserve, the Russians, or plain old kidnappers.

The DDOS could be a coincidence or it might be linked to the kidnapping

The kidnapping could be fake. He may have gotten word that he was going to be killed for his involvement in cryptos and orchestrated everything.

Given that no shots were fired during the kidnapping, he either had no bodyguards or they weren't armed. It's possible, although unlikely, they were in on it.

And they let him go...
https://www.zerohedge.com/news/2017-...million-ransom

"Just yesterday we warned that the lives of the world's new "Bitcoin Billionaires" had just become a bit more complicated after reports surfaced that one such crypto investor, Pavel Lerner, was kidnapped by a group of armed men wearing ski masks as he left his office in the Obolon district of Kiev earlier this week.

While it may have seemed that his fate was sealed at the moment of his kidnapping, the Financial Times has just confirmed the Lerner has been released after paying his kidnappers a $1 million ransom in Bitcoin."

Now,the question...like marked bills...can bitcoin be tracked back to the kidnapper's hideout? If any of those bitcoins are used, will it lead straight back to someone? In the case of Russians, they might be getting a visit from a Krocodile helicopter...

It still doesn't sound right. Why let him go so early? Aren't bitcoins traceable?

They should have kept the guy until they money got cleaned up a bit. It ain't over yet.

Tracing BitCoin is nearly impossible.

Yes, the block-chain of code is unique, meaning that it is identifiable as BitCoin, and not "duplicatable". But...

The transfer of the BitCoin is almost impossible to track. Imagine for a moment that you could set up 5,000 numbered bank accounts in 5,000 different banks, spread across 187 nations of the world.

Imagine that you could set up a computer program that transferred the $1M paid in ransom to each of those 5,000 accounts multiple times - back and forth across the planet - and get all 5,000 transfers done in a few seconds.

Imagine that the very first account that started all those accounts was made by someone who didn't have to give their name, their phone, their physical address, or their SSN.

Now figure out what it would take to trace that transaction, and where the money came from, when it was finally sent to the kidnappers.

It *could* be done. If you were the NSA, and you actually had the need to spend WAY MORE than $1M just to find out about the $1M.

Ain't gonna happen.
